the fifth season

Just bought it for under $40. I haven't seen the eps that are on that disc, but how did you guys like the dvd release of this season and the episodes in it?

Well I must say i have some issues with the Fifth Season. In mind it was a somewhat bland, generic, safe and pc Season. I know some people agree with me, while other really disagree and consider it the best season.

However I have found this feeling I have is probably caused by the big decrease in soudtrack quality after Ron Jones left in the end of the Fourth Season, and a somewhat bad string of episodes in the middle of the season. Oh, and some bland lighting...
Also more episodes with kids that usual...and kids=bad to me for the most time..

Looking better, there are some awesome episodes in it, including some of my favourites. It's a good season of Trek for sure...
Don't really want to say more with fear of spoiling you..

The Dvd release was serviceable like the rest of Tv Trek releases... This one I think has Stewart dancing and singing in the extra features and that's always nice...

The fifth season itself is one of TNG's best. A step up from the fourth which had a few too many boring moments. The balance of story and excitment was really well established in this season.

The DVD release is pretty much the same as any other season, okay, but not great.

Michael Piller, one of TNG's head hochos, was on record as saying he was disappointed with Season Five, and there's quite a proliferation of episodes with A/B stories which don't really connect. However, I really enjoy it and enjoy even the weaker episodes. It's probably not as strong Seasons Three and Four, but isn't that far behind. You should have a blast with it :techman:

It's a bit of a flop for me after the highs of the previous two seasons. It does have classics like Darmok, Ensign Ro, First Duty and The Inner Light, but there's a lot of filler.

It doesn't help that Unification is a massive let-down either.

I think the sixth season was generally a return to form though.

Isn't Season Five of TNG supposed to be the Golden Age of Trek in general, alongside Season Six?

Unification got the most viewers of any TNG episode. I think the "golden age" is really around the 30th anniversary celebrations in 1996 - two series going strong, a massively successful motion picture, and more merchandise than you could shake a stick at. That was the high point, but it was also obvious that it wasn't sustainable, and it was only downhill from then.

People just have different standards for different Treks I think. Because TNG was so good, its judged more harshly. Saying a TNG episode is good says a lot more about its quality than saying an Enterprise episode is good for example.

Anyway, I think season 5 was absolutely fantastic. There's only one excellent season of TNG to go before you reach extremely patchy season 7.

Season Six seems to be TNG's magnus opus for me subjectively from when I was eight years old, Picard getting tortured by Cardassians is more harrowing than his Borgification actually, while the somewhat underrated Season Seven has its gems ("The Pegasus" & "Inheritance") and was capped off better than any other final Trek season.

I'm torn on season five simply because although it does have a bunch of bland episodes, it also has two of my favorites ... Darkmok, and my ABSOLUTE favorite The Inner Light which was beautifully acted by Patrick Stewart

For as many good-to-great episodes there are in S5 (mostly in the first half), I keep thinking of the season as "that one with all the kid guest stars".

First off, I find the DVDs too damn expensive. I just watch the eps on YouTube!

I think the fifth season had some of the most moving and powerful eps, including Darmok, Ensign Ro, Violations, Ethics, The First Duty, and The Inner Light. So I don't agreee that the season was more generic. i think that description belongs more to season seven, IMHO, with the exception of Phantasms, Dark Page, Parallels, The Pegasus, Lower Decks, and . . . All Good Things.

^ You were online in 92? Wow!

As for me I think both season 5 and season 6 have some good episodes and some rubbish.

I'm sure a lot of fans here were. That was the first year my dad got internet in fact, despite my assuring him that we didn't need it. :)

For me, six is pretty much hit or miss, with more misses than hits. Season five, on the other hand, is just kinda somewhere in between. Not too many stinkers, but not really a lot of great episodes either. Like someone else said, it was TNG playing it safe.

IIRC it is,
It was done for Gene's birthday and its been posted on you tube.
Also IIRC think the segment in question was also aired on Sesame Street

I find the idea of Season Six being ripped apart online amusing, since the more things change the more they stay the same, while Season One was a million times worse.
