Should the truth about Zife be revealed?

Again, I am agreeing with a lot you said. Nevertheless, some comments:

The Mafia was never intended to be something positive when it was founded (and I am saying this without doing research because I would be very surprised indeed if I am wrong here). The Mafia has always been a criminal organization with no intention of doing anything good. If you want to look for a Star Trek equivalent, maybe something like the Orion Syndicate would fit but not Section 31.

Yes, of course, power corrupts (or at least, there is a danger that it does). With Section 31, this was definitely the case. Again, contrary to the Mafia, I am sure that many people working for Section 31 do have their limits and are unaware of what this organization stands for. They genuinely believe that what they do is helping Starfleet. And I am sure, in many cases they did.

My point has always been, yes, of course Section 31 has to be stopped. Really, would you compare the Bush administration with Section 31? That is frightening. We don`t have to argue about it that condoning torture, that a lot of what happened under Bush was not excusable. Well, maybe you have heard that one former Guantanamo Bay prisoner returned to Britain recently when Obama was already president. There have been threats, there have been gagging orders to keep quiet so that what actually happened won`t become public knowledge.

Bush`s “war against terror” and Starfleet`s Dominion War. Yes, there are parallels. I mean methods and motives. But nevertheless, these are explanations and should not be used as excuses. Whatever you want to label Section 31, there were and are high ranking members in Starfleet knowing about them and so far they seem to be doing nothing or very little indeed. Maybe there is no mechanism to stop them but nobody can tell me that Starfleet can`t do much more. The problem is that there doesn`t seem to be the will to finally tackle this organization – not only because of corruption but because sometimes these people can be useful. And maybe some people are also afraid to face the consequences not only of a personal kind but how it might affect Starfleet and its neighbours.

Please keep in mind that I am not a scientist and English is not my native language. I am trying to find the right vocabulary and obviously I am not always succeeding. All right, I might disagree with it that terror can`t be a policy but agree that calling Section 31 a terrorist organization is not a good choice. Criminal conspiracy is not bad but it doesn`t feel right either. This is difficult. I don`t think there is a simple label that fits here.

Yes, I have said from the beginning that sooner or later the truth will come out also because too many people know about it. I am hoping the same will be the case about what happened and happens in US politics.

I really doubt that Bacco is still the Federation President in 2400, considering that is 20 years into the future, and I'm betting that the UFP has term limits.

Unfortunately the circumstances behind how Section 31 was brought down in the early 2400s is not explained in 'The Good That Men Do', and there was no future scene like this one in the sequel to 'TGTMD', 'Kobayashi Maru'. But the idea was that S31's operations had been exposed to the point that it was public knowledge that Trip Tucker faked his death to go work for S31 against the Romulan threat.

Actually, Articles of the Federation established rather firmly that the Federation does not have term limits -- but it also established no Federation President that served more than three terms.

And given what she's had to deal with in just a year and a half, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Bacco decided to bow out of the race in '84.

Actually, if I'm not mistaken, her term is up in '83. She took office in late 2379.

But, yeah, I don't know that I'd want to be Federation President at this point in its history. Yeesh!

Actually I thought only Jake and Nog knew Tucker faked his death.

No, they made it clear in the book that this was all public knowledge now. It certainly wouldn't matter, since by the 2400s Tucker was long, long dead.
