So have you heard about Obama's latest plan to solve global warming?

No? Oh yeah, this is fucking brilliant.

Obama wants to shoot "pollutants" into the upper Stratosphere to "reflect" the suns heat, thus "cooling" the planet.

Oh yeah...whatever happened to "we need clean air"?

Haven't we seen this movie before? I think it was called "Highlander 2: The Quickening."

What's next, a massive sun shield out in space.

Turns out that these pollutants are "sulfur and other similar particles".

Ummm...isn't this what VOLCANOES naturally put out? And are actually one of the supposed CAUSES of global warming?

So in order to cool the atmosphere, we need to pollute it. Brilliant!!!

Give him credit, Rico ... it's a technological fix instead of one that requires excessive taxation or enforced sacrifice. It sure beats cap and trade.

Although I completely disagree with any solution that further involves man tinkering with our enviornment, I just wanted to clear something up about the sulfur particulates. Some aerosols, including those produced by volcanoes and pollution are actually significantly larger in size relative to water and carbon dioxide molecules. As a result they reflect, scatter, and absorb many forms of incoming solar radiation before they can even hit the surface. On the other hand, gasses such as water vapor and carbon dioxide allow UV, VIS, and some infrared in from the sun. This solar radiation is absorbed by the surface and is in turn emitted back into the atmosphere as longer wavelength infrared radiation. The "greenhouse gases" like water and CO2 absorb much of this stuff, causing overall heating. Basically different types of pollutants do different things. I am very much against us doing anything that involves tinkering with the atmosphere as we still don't have a great handle on how these changes might affect us in the long term.

Personally, after looking it over, it might work. It would be a stretch though. The idea is to utilize the earth's natural defenses to shield us from inbound solar radiation. That being said, Obama's administration isn't even saying this is what they'll do, only that it is one of the options on the table. I have no doubt there are many, many other options on the table, and this is one of the more extreme ones.
