Iano what about the beam that cuts through San Franciso? Any damage, what is up with that?

 

Nah no damage, they shoot up the platform generating the beam and it falls into the ocean by the bridge. It's not really a major scene or anything.

 

Her Romulan half comes from her original background notes (admittedly not 'canon', but a step above 'fanon', as far as I'm concerned).

Her relationship with Spock comes from several novels, plus an issue of the 2nd Marvel comics' Star Trek series.

 

Speaking of shooting things up... one thing I did notice is that phaser fire in this movie was very bursty. Everything was rapid little bursts of fire, no "streams".

 

It's just that we've all heard that there is a reason the Enterprise is built in Iowa this time. Did they deal with that?

I guess we all assumed that Nero would destroy San Francisco - taking the fleet yards with it - and that would have been the reason. So it isn't that, then?

I don't recall detail being given to why the Enterprise was built there, the cadets were obviously from outside the area per comments made in the bar scene.

As to Nero's beam...

He was targeting the planet as a whole, opening up a crack to insert the red matter and create a singularity in the core consuming the planet from within.

Anything special about the Narada, like weapons or technology or anything?

Oh, and that little ship we see fly into it in the previews, what was that?

 

It's *huge* for starters, and the weaponry was pretty advanced.

Starfleet sends in like 7 or 8 ships, the Enterprise is slightly delayed thanks to Sulu. Basically the Narada tears them a new one and the Enterprise is down to like 30% shields after the first volley. Only reason they survive is because Nero recognizes the name on the hull. So yeah... an extra century of weaponry tech helps.

 

I love anything that has to do with Starfleet Academy, so can I plan on seeing Spock at the Academy in some form or another (cadet and/or instructor)?

 

I'm guessing it is Romulan technology? Which is pretty powerful in comparison to the Federation even in the 24th century.

Can it cloak, does it cloak?

OH, and what happens during the time it destroys the Kelvin and when it meets up with the Enterprise, seems like a lot of time lapsed there, what was Nero doing?

they capture Prime Spock's ship which in turn gave them the technology needed to destroy planets, it was originally used to destroy a supernova in the 24th century

At first I was going to say it can't cloak... but I'm thinking of one scene in particular and I'm wondering now if it was cloaked at the time. Sorry, the memories are fading!!!

In reference to the time gap...

They are waiting that entire time, something like 25 years. To Prime Spock however the jump is instantenous. They were waiting because they needed Spock's ship to complete the mission.

 

I've got a question for you Iano, does the film establish the dates (as in what year) the various scenes take place in? For example, is Kirk still born in 2233? And is there a gap in time between Kirk graduating and assuming command of the Enteprise?

I remember two scenes with dates in them. The first was when Nero asked Robau the stardate and there is a "3 years later" transition during the academy scene. Sorry I don't remember the particular date, but that date should coincide with Kirk's birth as the "alt" universe begins during that same scene.

 

What intervals of Spock's life do we see?

 

About Vulcan being blown up being a failure on the part of the heroes. This is sort of true, but it's also a pretty standard way of having a dramatic conflict and make the baddie actually work. What's the standard Batman storyline again? Something like 'Batman looses, Batman plans, Batman wins.'

Look at past Trek movies:

TWOK: They fail to save the Regula scientists. Several crewmen are killed in the first fight. Oh yeah, and Spock dies at the end. What a failure that was, huh?

TSFS: The Grissom is destroyed, Kirk's son is killed, Genesis blows up and the Enterprise is destroyed. OMG.

TUC: They fail to save the Klingon Prez, who they were escorting.

GEN: Ent-D destroyed, Armagosa system wiped out, Observatory crew killed...Well, ok, they barely justified that one.

FC: A big chunk of the crew gets killed.

They've upped the stakes here to be sure. Vulcan is destroyed, but every single Federation planet was on Nero's hit list, so that's Nero:1 Good Guys: ~150. I could point out other successful movies that involved a lot of 'failure' on the part of the good guys. LOTR and Star Wars come to mind. Hoth, The destruction of Alderaan, massacre of the Jedi, etc, etc.

 

Young boy, pre-Starfleet (teens? 20s?), and Academy graduate / bulk of the movie.

 

I may be the only one who thinks that Vulcan's *goodbye* is pretty damn cool. It's different, dramatic and bold; I like it!

 

Nice! So, like a little boy on Vulcan? And does Spock where a cool Academy uniform at all?
