I love Rent.

For me personally, "Carousel" was the greatest musical ever, but I saw it under exceptionally good conditions as well.

Also, there are a ton of musicals that I think are really good.

I liked Rent, but I don't think it was the greatest musical ever.

Being my Mother's son, I have to agree. For her the best stage musical is what she affectionately calls The Glums (you work it out) and the best film musical is West Side Story.

This thread made me go listen to my favorite song from the movie: Take me Or Leave Me. Idina Menzel and Tracie Thoms do such a beautiful Duet of that song.

I actually once auditioned for the Broadway production without actually realizing it. I'd gone to a cattle call to keep a friend company, but I couldn't find her in the crowd. I decided to stick around and sing anyway - I have some musical theatre experience - so I got into the line. A couple of hours later, I went in, sang, thanked the people behind the desk and left. On my way out, I saw a sign indicating that the production was the Broadway one. All that time, I'd figured I was auditioning for the local show. I'm not sure if I would have stuck around had I known before going in. :o

And yet... I've never actually seen the show, in any form.

I hate Rent. :p Sorry, but I'm more of a Hedwig and the Angry Inch fan.
Several years ago during college, I shared a tiny apartment in the East Village in Manhattan. When I say tiny, I mean it. The apartment was 6 1/2 feet by 11. There was a loft where my roommate slept, with just enough headroom to sit up on a mattress. I slept on a mattress on the floor below. There was a mini-fridge, an airline sized sink, and a shared bathroom for the floor (in which I once discovered a naked woman. Anyway, my roommate was an obese vegan Rent fanatic (Seriously, she weighed about 350-400 lbs -- on a vegan diet! How does that even happen?). She was so crazy about Rent that she'd seen the show over 20 times. She even volunteered as an usher so she could see it for free. She had the Rent book, the book about the author, playbills, posters (fortunately, there wasn't enough room on the walls to hang them!), and a Rent diary.

This roommate was also an obnoxious nitwit, so maybe she's part of the reason for my unfriendly attitude towards the show.
You let a 400 vegan sleep on a loft above your head? Are you crazy?

A 400 meat eater, maybe....
People did comment on that a lot. Besides, it was only until she broke the ladder and couldn't get up there any more. After that I had to take the top bunk -- the only way to get up was to stand on the windowsill and haul yourself up the last four feet by your arms. It was an...interesting...living situation.

I just paid mine today. Wouldn't say I "love" it though.

Trekker, paying it a few days early.

Home Depot has Ladders.
It was a loft with a built-in ladder. There wouldn't have been enough room to put in another type of ladder -- you'd just have to rebuild it. But who would care enough about a shit-hole 6 1/2 by 11 room on St. Marks Place, cluttered with Rent memorabilia, to put any effort into it? I lived there only another month or two before realizing that Manhattan just isn't worth it, and Brooklyn is the way to go.

But, back to the topic...
