D or E?

Who cares...the E just looks better and thats all I care about...I could care-a-less where the engines and the dooohickies are. That is in the category of 'technobabble' and is the kind of logic, IMO, that started TREK down the path to the "DARK SIDE" or...oblivion..

As has already been said a zillion times, it's all personal opinion. I like both ships. But I really liked the E-D because I grew up watching TNG and it had really become an important part of what TNG was for me. E-E is a sharp little war machine designed to look hot and deadly and it does that well. That's not really what the TNG series was about though.

And, there was a lot more to the "fall of Trek" than just Voyager's endless technobabble nonsense. It includes the writers just running out of story ideas. Kinda like where Stargate has been since season 5 of the first show.

It is still rather strange to have engines that produce absolutely massive thrust lining up with other parts of the ship going aft. Not much "technobabble" about that. For me, that kind of thing wanders towards science fantasy instead of harder science fiction.

yeah....I agree. But Star Trek and Hard-scifi have never really been the best of friends, which is why I think, overall, star trek has been as successful as it has been going on 40+ years. Once it gets to 'heady' for the average person (TMP) then it misses its mark...IMO..

It bothers me that the registry isn't centered (it's too far to the left by half a lifeboat). It looks like they moved the "NCC" to the left to accomodate five-digit registries, and the two 1s in 1701-E are so narrow that the difference becomes apparent.

I had assumed that the letter 'E' was just a lot smaller than the 'D' but the longer I look at it, the more slipped it looks. I don't know why they'd have set up the NCC for five-digit registries because IIRC the four footer was the only one that was relabeled as such.

The "E" needs to be rotated counterclockwise a bit, yes.
For the auction, they put the "D" back in place, but it's still too far to the left.

Was the Yamato ever shown with its corrected five-digit registry in Contagion? It would've been on the 6-footer...

edit: It looks like the dash between the 1 and the E is way too short.

D for me, as other people have said here, it has character and majesty. Its just so idiosyncratic. You'd never get a spaceship so gawky and yet so damn cool at the same time in modern cinema/tv, everythings postmodern and self consciously hip nowadays.

The Enterprise-B had better impulse engines, but they should've removed the dinky little ones that they replaced, and the fairings on the secondary hull completely ruined the ship's elegance.

I call those fairings "love handles," partially because they're located along the waistline of the engineering hull, and partially because they're as fugly as love handles. :p

You're right about the Yamato's number showing, but for some reason I was under the impression that they used a one-off model for it because it was exploding. (Maybe from one of the kits?) Also, I would hope when they redid the paint job on the 6 for 'Generations' they would have redone the lettering.

I like 'em. The fairings that is.

Generations (registry NOT centered...note the eight lifeboats beneath the registry):

It appears they used two different models for this scene...

Isn't it just a matter of having nacelles in a descended position for the E and an ascended position for the D ship? There both federation hotels. The D just looks like it booked more rooms. The Intrepid could be nacelles to the side but its not that round flying saucer look. All else could be the same for the Galaxy, Sovereign, and Intrepid class ships except the weapons on the federation starships are better and of course there is the awesome astrometrics aboard the Voyager. Not to offend any of the ships, I would give up my current life to serve aboard any of them especially with 7 of 9.

Good eye. :)

We know that they built that gigantic 18-foot saucer for the crash sequence, so it must be the one with centered text and the non-centered one must be the 6-footer's saucer.

I wonder why the 6-footer's saucer had to be used? They built the 18-foot saucer specifically for the crash. One would have thought that would have been enough.

Behold:

(And no, that's not me.)

They anticipated the big one getting damaged on one take I believe. And there was an issue with the budget in building the big one twice for that very last shot we see above. I think that's what the extra feature disc stated.

If that saucer is 18 feet wide, then those people are giants.

It is! They used the top not the inside but the top of a 150 pick-up truck bed to transport it around the set and 8 guys to carry it.

Funny thing is that they didn't. If you catch those extra feature discs in the series of ST movies they have a lot of good information in them. They specifically talked about this picture and how they destroyed a model to make that cut out. I think she (the props archivist) said that piece was floating around the office and for years they could not figure out what it belonged to and then someone nailed it as the cut for that ship. Great info on those extra feature disc in the Production/visual effects features.
