MY Enterprise

I know its a strange title for in a forum dedicated to ENTERPRISE. But everyone loves to pick this show apart; even I do. But I actually think that ENTERPRISE had a great idea, but they just, IMO, executed it all wrong....

So..for all you people who love to slam this show, what would you have done differently? And don't say you wouldn't have done it to begin with. Pretend you were hired as the showrunner for this show...how would you have done it differently to not only appeal to old fans, but, and this is most important, appeal to new fans as well.

If you really think ENTERPRISE had issues then what would you have done differently....step up and swing away...(I, being the OP, will judge your ideas on a 1-10 scale.) I am un-biased and very wise in my years. In fact, I am a legend in my own mind.

I think you'll love this one!

I give MACKS a 9+...and I really like what he did by keeping it 'small'. What I hated most about this show was how fast they became 'just another' TREK crew in space fighting klingons...

Why not a 10? No mention of HOT LOOKING CHICS to appeal to the 14 year olds you are trying to appeal to. Other than that; HOME RUN!!!

How about to start with no three B's Berman, Bragga and Bakula?

A different Captain one whoo is a commandeer and not one with a hero complex.

T-Pol as Science Officer and Trip as first officer and chief Engineer.

Hoshi, travis and Malcoolm as more than backdrops.

Hosjh, mal and Travis, with teir own episodes or even arcs.

No Xindi, Whole Arc never showed me much.

Orion sybndicate as first enemies and then romulans.

Trip and T-Pol romance allowed to grow in to a real love affair with them sleepiing together as often as possible.

Captain delegating and not going on away missions but rarely.

CONTINUITY. and a continuing story line.

NO DAMNED DOG.

Stronger t-Pol. Involved in more of the fighting and in her own Eps where she might be on away missions.

Trip really being able to act as first Officer and in command when Captain is off ship.

Basically a completely different series.

I am going to give you a 9+ for this, Penguin.

However; I actually have no problem with Archer going on away missions at the start. His was the first ship and I could see a captain wanting to do that. But somewhere along the line he should have been seriously injured and Star Fleet puts out a policy to stop captains from doing it...kind of like a trial by error..

But love your list...

Excellent post! My comments in bold below yours.

A different Captain one whoo is a commandeer and not one with a hero complex.
Bakula wasn't that bad but I agree the hero stuff had to go. He could have been less smug about it. We all knew Archer was going to be the most important figure in federation history.

T-Pol as Science Officer and Trip as first officer and chief Engineer.
I agree with that one as well, They didn't need to make her that "Spock like"

Hoshi, travis and Malcoolm as more than backdrops.
Good actors that were wasted in my opinion.

Hosjh, mal and Travis, with teir own episodes or even arcs.
To expand on that, there weren't anywhere near enough character based episodes, not just those three.

No Xindi, Whole Arc never showed me much.
I thought it was good but could have been done in less than half the time.

Orion sybndicate as first enemies and then romulans.
Cool

Trip and T-Pol romance allowed to grow in to a real love affair with them sleepiing together as often as possible.
Needless to say, I agree wholeheartedly.

Captain delegating and not going on away missions but rarely.

CONTINUITY. and a continuing story line.
Definatly a week point in Enterprise

NO DAMNED DOG.
I thought everyone loved porthos?

Stronger t-Pol. Involved in more of the fighting and in her own Eps where she might be on away missions.

Agreed. In my opinion the Trip character was the most important one in the show

Basically a completely different series.
A completely different series? No. It just needed to be done (written) better.

If I'm the show runner, the first thing I'm going to do before tweeking the content is to get an agreement from the suits that this thing is going to be available in syndicated distribution like TNG was. Using it to try and prop up a dying network isn't going to drive ratings. If people can't find it, its not going to last.

Edit:

Oh. I guess that's what happened after all. ;)

I'd keep the Beebs as exec. producers, but in my ENT, Manny Coto & Ira Steven Behr would have ran it with some occasional help from certain champions of Trek Lit (fanwank, sure, but who cares really?)

A different Captain one who is a commandeer and not one with a hero complex.
A hero complex...
"Don't try to be a great man. Just be a man, and let history make its own judgment." With ENT, it was the other way around. Major FAIL.

Hoshi, travis and Malcoolm as more than backdrops.
Hosh, mal and Travis, with teir own episodes or even arcs.
Absolutely.

Trip and T-Pol romance allowed to grow in to a real love affair with them sleeping together as often as possible.
A spin off series, the "Trip & T'Pol Show," picked up by HBO. A true prequel to "Vulcan Love Slave" trilogy.

NO DAMNED DOG.
What? No! Neelix was the heart and soul of... oh, wait.
Stronger t-Pol. Involved in more of the fighting and in her own Eps where she might be on away missions.
Vulcans are supposed to be 3 times stronger than humans, just not on this show, apparently.

 Thanks. That would be Bro.

Getting Enterprise was one of the biggest bitches that I had with the show. I ended up having to pay extra each month to Dish, just so that I could get UPN to watch it one hour a week. Other wise there wasn't anything else worth tuning in to on the steaming turd.

The Ship.

Developed by the United Earth Military Authority (UEMA) as a pure combat vessel, the Declaration class is designed to protect Earth and it's colonies from alien aggression. With the project running over budget and behind schedule, UEMA turns to the United Earth Space Probe Agency for funding and resources. As a result of this uneasy alliance, the last ship of the initial production run, Enterprise, is adapted to serve as a deep space research and exploration vessel. Nominally under UESPA control, it must still perform military tasks when required.

Characters.

CO: Captain Jackson 'Jacko' Archer. American. UESPA.
Having participated in numerous exploration missions, including first contact with the Denobulans, Archer is an ideal choice for command. He is less comfortable with the ship's military role, and relies heavily on his first officer.

XO: Commander Maria Hernandez. Mexican. UEMA.
Career military. In addition to her job as XO she acts as the ships chief tactical officer. Occasionally her focus on military solutions will bring her into conflict with the captain's more peaceful approach. Is a practising (not lapsed!) Catholic.

Chief Engineer: Commander Charles 'Trip' Tucker III. American. UESPA.
Don't let his Southern accent and good old boy ways fool you. Trip has a brilliant mind, and studied high energy physics at Cambridge. An old friend of the captain, Trip can be relied upon to back up Archer's decisions. Also acts as second officer.

Helm Officer: Lt. Commander Travis Mayweather. Canadian. UEMA
Cocky to the point of arrogance, Travis knows he's the best helmsman in space. Unhappy to be assigned to what he sees as a 'babysitting job', he'd much rather be on a combat posting, and let's everyone know it. Only came along because he was promised his choice of post after his first tour was up. Of course, when he sees what the Enterprise gets into, he may just decide to stick around...

Communications Officer. Lt. Hoshi Sato. Japanese. UESPA.
In addition to her skills as a linguist, Sato is a trained diplomat. As such, she's the captain's right hand woman during first contact missions, trade negotiations and the like.

Marine Commander. Lt. Malcolm Reed. New Zealand. UEMA Marine Division.
A tough Kiwi, Reed is in charge of the detachment of marines assigned for security on the ship. Like Travis he is initially unhappy about the posting, and suspects that it is essentially punishment after he and his men completely trounced a much larger, supposedly superior force during a training exercise. The opposing force's commander was on his fast track to promotion until the defeat, and pulled a few strings to get Reed's unit assigned to a supposed dead end assignment.
As an aside, whilst the unit is referred to as 'Mako's', that's just a nickname, a reference to the shark. It does not stand for anything.

Surgeon. Doctor Philip Locke. American. Civilian.
Whilst the ship has a couple of Corpsman on board, and the Mako's have their own medics, Archer was unwilling to start his mission without a fully trained doctor on board. Despite his gruff, no nonsense manner, Dr. Locke is an ideal choice. In addition to twenty years experience, he has recently participated in the cross species medical program, giving him a familiarity with alien species unmatched by any other Earth physician.

Scientific Advisor. Professor Polly 'Mycroft' Partridge. British. Civilian.
An old friend of Trip's from his Cambridge years, getting Polly on board was a real coup. Although best known as an astrophysicist, she posses an astonishingly high IQ, and has degrees in numerous scientific disciplines. Her nickname was bestowed upon her at university by a fellow student who was fond of the Sherlock Holmes stories, and refers to a description of Holmes' elder brother "Other men are specialists, but (Mycroft's) specialism is omniscience".
Unlike the cool, calculating 'ice maiden' type seen with 7of9 and T'pol, Polly is wildly enthusiastic about the universe, and loves science because it helps us understand the cosmos more completely. Despite their differing philosophies (Polly is a pacifist and entirely Atheist), she get's on well with Hernandez, eventually forming a deep friendship.
To avoid her becoming too much of a Mary Sue, she can't sing or play a musical instrument, isn't good with animals and is absolutely useless in a fight, though she may learn some martial arts moves from Maria, as the series progresses.
Oh, and she fulfils the HOT LOOKING CHICK to get the 14 year olds watching criteria. In fact, given her quirky sense of humour, plus her love of 20th century TV and movies, she may even wear a catsuit (think Emma Peel, Trinity or Selene. Or possibly even Wilma Deering!):luvlove:.

In addition there should be several other recurring characters. A couple more civilian scientists, a civilian chef who acts as unofficial moral officer, plus a few crew both UEMA and UESPA who crop up regularly.
There should also be at least two gay characters amongst them, though this shouldn't be used a plot point. About half way through the first season, it becomes obvious that, for example, one of the Mako's is seeing the assistant chief engineer.

I actually like this Mr. Badger..sounds like you put a lot of thought into it. And I like the fact your doctor is a human. Phlox never really did anything for me...

Rob

^ Well what I was thinking, as this is Earth's first extended deep space mission, it should be an all human affair. I always found the whole 'Vulcans stopped my daddy building his engine' business to be a rather contrived way to generate conflict (and hence drama) between Archer and T'pol. If on the other hand you have a mix of military and civilian groups, who naturally have differing approaches, then the potential for drama is built in.

If you want aliens in the crew, they can certainly join for a while.
"Captain Archer, the Andorians have given us permission to survey sectors 19 to 24, which lie along their border. As they have sensitive military installations in that area, an observer will be assigned to your ship for the duration of this mission. Rendevous with their cruiser at Qualgor 6, and pick up Captain Shran."

This is part of the 'trying to follow Gene's' mantra that sometimes got in the way of all the star treks...

Phlox was there to be the character whom we see our selves through...Spock--Data--Odo--Quark to some degree--Voyager's Doctor...all of them were the ones we were supposed to be there to offer 'insight' on humanity from an outsider's point of view...

Blah!!!

An all human crew for Archer's ship was the way to go..

Good stuff, Badger. It's interesting that you have a mix of astronaut, military and civilian types aboard. I particularly like the idea of a whole human crew.

I like those ideas JiNX-01. I liked them the first time too. Generally, just the most basic things (like going home to drop off the dead and pick up more crew) could have affected the show without completely changing it.

Thanks. When I heard that the new Trek was going to be a prequel, my expectation was a "Right Stuff" kind of series. ("First Flight" was the only episode that reflects what I was expecting).

Astronauts heading into space in a much cruder ship, where not everybody gets along with everybody else, some PG-13 evidence of sexual promiscuity among the crew (maybe some crew members are even married). Injuries that truly demonstrate how dangerous it is out there and when stuff goes wrong, people lose body parts or end up dead, because there isn't a fantastic, super-advanced medical bay with Super!Alien!Doctor! on board (not that I don't like the NX-01 and Dr. Phlox, I do very much; I'm just talking about my expectations).

I also think the crew should have had a touch of revulsion or xenophobia on occasion when meeting some of the more alien aliens. I remember in "Arena" (TOS), Uhura recoils at the sight of the Gorn, and she was an experienced space farer. I would have expected even more of that from the new kids on the block (considering in "Broken Bow" we only see Vulcans, a Denobulan and Klingon -- all humanoid species -- suppose they were the only types of aliens humans had seen up to the point of launch setting up expectations that are entirely wrong so we see crew having "holy :censored:" reactions during first contacts.
