What's up with the next James Bond movie?

Yeah bring back fun older characters and a gaget man!

While we are at it fire Daniel Craig, he is a hack and can't handle James Bond and his face looks like he is 48.

I liked most of Craig's other films, but his Bond I could never warm up to. My choice for James Bond would have been Clive Owen.

Maybe a surprise to all of you - the next Bond may be a BLACK Bond or a woman Bond.

It was being discussed before the Daniel Craig installments. Most recently P Diddy jumped from an airplane and air glided down to a Bond party thrown by the producers in audition for the role. They are considering many others too:

A black Bond I would have no problem with (nor would I have a problem with a black Doctor on Doctor Who). A female Bond? Just create a new character, then. And that list is total balls... not a single British actor on it. Yeah, I know, why does Bond have to be played by someone from the British Isles (or Australia... I'll let it go that far afield) when we've had Americans play Robin Hood and a Welshman don the Batsuit? Well, dammit, it's just not right. :p

Not that this is going to happen anytime soon; Craig is signed up for the next three Bond films.

I don't know why everybody says QoS doesn't have any humor. A few scenes had me laughing, like "Is she your mother?"

"She likes to think she is."

Granted the lines aren't cheesy-Schwarzenegger-wannabe one-liners, but I thought they were amusing enough.

I never understand why people want comedy at all in the Bond films. A few funny lines here and there are fine, but some of the movies were basically just a string of one comedic gag after another. If I want Austin Powers, I'll go see Austin Powers.

As much as I like John Cleese, I do not want to see him hamming it up with James Bond. I don't want to see any yuk-yuk sitcomish scenes with Moneypenny, either.

I'd like to see another serious espionage thriller, like we saw with Casino Royale and QoS (as well as Dr. No, FRWL, FYEO, LTK and a few others). A somewhat lighter tone is fine, but I really hope the series doesn't go back to the Moore/Brosnan spy comedies. It just doesn't work these days, particularly when that style has been so expertly parodied by Austin Powers.

I'd be fine with a black James Bond, as long as he was British. No American rappers, thanks. And no females - at that point its not the same character. Just make a new franchise if you want a female spy as the main character. Hell, they were going to make a "Jinx" movie at one point, just do that.

The rather stupid idea of a female Bond - Jane Bond? - has been kicking around for many many years but it's never seriously been entertained by the producers. It would be an entirely different character. Why even call it a female James Bond? Since when is James a woman's name? It's a silly notion that the tabloids like to play with, so that they can fantasise about their crush of the day in the role. I remember when they used to talk about Sharon Stone, then it was Catherine Zeta Jones, no doubt it will be Angelina next time round.

As to a black Bond, there was a flurry of betting on Colin Salmon a few years ago. He played Charles Robinson, an aide to M, opposite Brosnan's 007 and used to fill in for Brosnan in other actors' auditions. Pierce himself tipped him to play 007. The idea of someone like P Diddy as Bond, though, is plain silly, IMHO.

For my money, if the best actor for the role happens to be black, then so be it, cast him. But casting a black actor just for the sake of making Bond black is rather pointless, IMHO.

^ I personally hope they keep Daniel Craig on for three or four more movies, but I really think Colin Salmon would be a kick ass Bond too :techman:

^Craig is already signed up for the next three movies. He signed a five-movie contract when they got him for Casino Royale.

As for the issue of "comedy," I don't have any objection to the fun banter between Bond and Moneypenny; it was a staple of the series since Dr. No. There were only two times when it really got bad for me. The first was when Roger Moore and Lois Maxwell both hung around too long in the '80s. Then, to make matters worse, Maxwell's replacement Caroline Bliss had zero chemistry with Timothy Dalton, and couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag. I really thought the interaction between Brosnan and Samantha Bond was a bit of fun.

The main reason why an American can't play Bond is that the vast majority of US actors simply can't do a credible English accent, or, for that matter, a convincing Irish, Scottish or Welsh one.

Some female actors can - Meryl Streep or Gwyneth Paltrow for example. And Jon Voight did a good Irish accent in The General. But the likes of Redford in Out of Africa or Kevin Costner in Robin Hood - well, their efforts were so bad that ultimately they stopped even trying to affect an English accent and just went with their own.

Christian Bale does a spot-on American accent (to my ears at least) as do the likes of Tim Roth and Gary Oldman, which is why they can convincingly play Yanks. Get an American who can do a convincing English accent and he could play Bond.

Mind you, Connery couldn't really do an English accent, come to think of it ... :p

If true - sorry I don't belive it for a second - it'd keep up the comparisons between Craig and Dalton.

P Diddy could never be Bond. Did you know he got replaced by Any Given Sunday by Jamie Foxx? Something about throwing like a girl.

How about Chiwetel Ejiofor?

Also: Colin Salmon, Eamonn Walker, Idris Elba.

Ejifor is kind of small, albeit an excellent actor who can handle action scenes. But I think his size and stature would go against him. I also think the fact that Colin Salmon has been in a Bond movie pretty much excludes him - you may as well suggest Sean Bean, after he played 006 in Goldeneye.

Elba or Walker would definitely be interesting, though the latter might be pushing on a bit age-wise.

The producers did consider Colin Salmon for Bond in Casino Royale - in fact he stood in for Brosnan during the screen tests for most of the Bond Girls - but in the end they said they wanted someone younger.

^ As did Maud Adams (TMWTGG and Octopussy, in which she played the title role). But playing two supporting roles in movies a decade apart and playing 007 himself are rather different. Its unlikely that many people would remember or confuse JDB's corrupt general in TLD with his CIA man in Goldeneye. But an MI6 man working for M then becoming James Bond? Not the same, if you ask me.

Besides, given the age thing (he's now 47, almost a decade older than Craig), at this stage the debate is rather academic. Unless, to paraphrase Sean Connery on being replaced by Roger Moore, Craig decides to make way for an older man ...

I don't care for the idea of making James Bond black, though Colin Salmon and Idris Alba would be too very good choices. I would rather a new black super-spy be created rather than browning Bond.

About the next film, I got the feeling that Quantum was the second act in a trilogy so I hope they finish the trilogy. I wasn't a fan of Quantum, but I might like it better if there was more resolution. QoS built up Quantum to be an octopus, with its tentacles everywhere so I hope they don't drop the storyline.

That being said, I hope Quantum has a better villain than Greene and the guy with the toupee. They were horrible villains. I liked Medrano. But the other two were garbage.

I also think the next film should be a little lighter, with some quips from Bond, some flirtation, and more women. He had no game in Quantum. Plus, he didn't have a lot of smarts either. He just kept killing people, and lucking up on the trail of Quantum. I would like to see him display a little more intelligence the third time around.

I think it's too early to call for Craig's head. I wasn't a big fan of his casting, but Casino Royale made me a believer. I also thought he did okay in QoS, but the storyline and villains were lacking.

They do good American mid-western accents (or "no accent" as some of us in the states say), which is what communications majors are tought to have in US universities.

There's far more distinct regional accents in Europe, even Great Britain alone, than the entire USA. So when an American actor slips up, it's bound to be more noticable.

Some male Brit actors come across as a bit nelly when taking on a midwestern accent...Jamie Bamber and Hugh Laurie.

As for Salmon. I would like it if they brought him back. I rather liked Charles. I'd like to see both he and Tanner have more to do in the current continuity.

And if you want to hear an example of a British actor screwing up when doing a more regional American accent, listen to Dominic West try to do a Baltimore accent on The Wire.
