IMHO..., ST:TFB has a nicer ring to it than ST:09 or ST:IX.

I can understand why they would have the top two characters of TOS (Kirk & Spock) & then one of the most important people in the film (Illia) But, if they are going to have three peeps from the senior staff on the poster then I would expect them to use Kirk, Spock & McCoy.

Here are my theories: 1) as stated above maybe Uhura has a large role than McCoy, or 2) maybe Zoe's agents got her on the poster just like Winona's got her on the main billing of the film, or 3) they thought she looked good so they decided to slap her on the poster to get people to watch the movie, or 4) to reach out to the female and/or African-American demographic.

More than likely a combination of 3 and 4.

and since young males are a big demographic they want, you don't want them to think it's some homoerotic adventure and that there are some women in there.

I'm thinking it might be a bit bright for a desktop as is, but what about a negative image? Hmmm...

Not only an art-design and layout formula, but also frequently an economic one, depending on stipulations negotiated into the contracts of the principal actors and production staff. What results may be deemed bad art, but it's bad art with very specific reasons for being exactly the way it is. Book cover art works the same way.

The Iron Man poster is good because most people went into it having no idea what "Iron Man" is - with such low awareness, they can't use a more iconic, minimal approach without risking that nobody will know what the fuck is going on and just ignore the poster entirely.

Star Trek awareness is much stronger than Iron Man's was a year ago, which means they don't need to take a conservative approach and look like every other movie poster with head shots. That's what must be behind the "vague outline of the Enterprise" movie for the American market - they are trusting that people will recognize the shape.

Making the shape vague means they have to stop and look at the damn thing, which means they notice it. A poster that looks like every other, or is too easy to parse, is more likely to be ignored. The American poster looks like it's had some thought put into it - it's aiming to hit just the right "attentiveness" spot between boredom and confusion.

But apparently they don't think Europeans will recognize the shape of the Enterprise and that awareness of Star Trek in Europe is about the same as awareness of "Iron Man" in America a year ago - you gotta hit them over the head with the message and can't afford to take the subtle approach.

The Spanish poster with the GG Bridge getting blown up suggests that Star Trek awareness in Spain is near zero and the movie is being marketed as just another exciting blow-em-up flick, as though Star Trek were a brand new entity being introduced for the first time.

In Japan, the situation is more like America: there's enough awareness that you can just say STAR TREK and have done with it. But if that's the case, they could have used the vague Enterprise approach, or some other clever approach, and made the poster more distinctive. That one is just lazy.

I'd really love to see the research that these posters are based on.
