Stewart Lee's Comedy Vehicle

Not seen any of this at all, but did Lee have a go at E4 at some point in his show? I only ask because, while I was watching My Name is Earl and TBBT in the lead up to last night's Skins, the continuity announcer made some remark about him not watching E4, saying he'll miss TBBT and Skins, unless he secretly does watch E4.

Yeah, he said Channel 4 was like a sewage pipe running straight through your TV screen in to your face, whereas E4 is like you constructed a sluice to allow it in to your house.

Wow. That's a pretty weak joke, really. Not that I'm particularly defending the crap they show on C4/E4 most of the time, but no channel is perfect these days, and the vast majority of stuff on TV is total crap, regardless of what channel shows it. Besides, haven't people been making jokes like that about ITV for years?

The only time E4 annoys me, is when there's a new series of Big Brother running, and it turns into the 24hr voyeur channel, at the expense of all its other programming.

Not only was it a weak joke, he ran it in to the ground with a sketch about it, which he then repeated 2 more times.

To be honest, Lee came across as a bit of a smug, elitist whinger this week. He's always had a tendency to overplay his hand like that.

When he's good, he's good. But he needs to reign it in occasionally.

I've never been as enamoured with Stewart Lee as a lot of people seem to be, that's why I haven't been in a big rush to watch his new show, and the stuff I'm reading in this thread isn't doing a lot to change that. I wll go back and watch the first few episodes, cause it's probably unfair to judge it off a few second hand re-tellings on a message board, but I have to say, I'm not expecting much.

Off topic, but does anyone know if/when we're getting any new Mitchell and Webb, or Armstrong and Miller?

Agreed. He does seem to be going overboard lately. Watching this show has actually made me reconsider buying his newest DVD.

That Mitchell and Webb Look was recommissioned for a third series last summer, and I believe another series of Armstrong and Miller is due soon.

Episode 3 was on last night...

Hmm, I really don't see the point of this. I feel very cheated in fact. Pretty much his whole routine in the ep was lifted directly word for word from his 41st Best Stand Up act. BBC2 may as well have just shown that instead
A couple of the inserted sketches were funny, but most were pointless and not that good
There are some good points, and actually if you haven't seen the DVD of the live show then I guess it'd still be good. But even the whole "if you want a nigger for a neighbour" thing I've heard him spout on three previous seperate occasions now
ie- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1IYx4Bc6_eE (from nearly two years ago)

And as for him having a go at Northeners, I would say this- if you want to make a new TV show it would help if you wrote some new fucking material!

Shame, as I thought the first episode was brilliant

I haven't had a chance to watch it yet, but I'm kinda starting to wonder if I want to. I liked Stand Up Comedian, but after seeing last weeks, and reading what you just said it kinda seems like he's not really that popular for a reason.

It was another disappointing effort this week. Basing the entire routine around the weightwatcher's story didn't work as it didn't go anywhere, and while I'm sure he had some good points to make, I'm not certain he managed to.

I laughed more than last week. But not by a lot. That Kofi Annan joke went on too long, as did a lot of it. I know that's his shtick but it seems over used. The first time he did the Hitler political correctness gone mad sketch it was funny, second time it wasn't really. WTF was the Northern sketch supposed to be? "They're backwards and living in the past up north"? wow original material there...

Bit slow catching up but seen the 2nd and 3rd eps now. Still very hit and miss for me, did like the march of the penguins thing but the whole sewer pipe thing was barely funny the first time let alone the times after. Still must have hit a nerve as apaprently an E4 continuity announcer commented on 'bitter unfunny comedian Stewart Lee'

The interesting thing with both 2 and 3 is that in both he seems to be channelling Richard Herring at points, and I still maintain he's funnier with someone.

Not overly amazing this week, but at least he had some new material. Oh, and the sketches are still shit

I liked the stuff about Woolworthes, MFI and Zavvi
"Yeah I still remember when Zavvi first opened. I must have been about 38/39"
