They emailed me this morning. They're going to send me a prepaid label and when they get the XBOX 360, they're going to refund my money.

Another one of my co-workers wanted to pass along his thanks for this thread. Basically he was like me, he had a 360 since launch, went through all the problems and finally gave up and went to a PS3. But unlike me, he didn't go out and get another 360 when the Jaspers came out. So after this discussion, I think he's quite content to never own another 360 again.
Meanwhile I find myself wondering just how long my new Jasper unit is going to last.

Wow, I'm surprised by that. Maybe you already discussed this upthread and I missed it, but if I might ask, how long ago did you buy the 360?
I had a sticker on mine when i sent it in, and sure enough it was still on it when I got it backIts weird that there are so many people who are getting different Xbox's back. I got the same one back when i had to send mine back in
How could you tell?
(I'm awaiting mine now.)

It's been 4 weeks. The console failed after 3 weeks.
They sent me a second one, and it failed after a couple of hours. Both of them E74 RROD (1 light).

I guess I was surprised they didn't make you take it back to the retailer. Any way, that's good news for you (that you're getting your money back that is).
Once again, I'm amazed they just can't get this thing right and I'm amazed that people (me included) continue to buy the thing. Of course we've been buying shoddy Windows products for how many years now? I'm con viced Gates has made a deal with Satan.
I can understand your anger, given your experiences. I've never been a 'bash Microsoft' person (and I'm not saying you are either, J.) or a 'bash Mac' person, although I have always found PCs easier to deal with. I used Macs at work for years and had more problems with them than I ever have my personal PCs. So I guess my brand experience has been relatively even.
In my personal experience, I had an XBOX before I had a PS2 (I had a PS but didn't play it too much) and so I guess I bought into the loyalty there. My original XBOX, which was a pre-owned to start with, crapped out on me and I had a replacement plan so I lucked out and was able to get a replacement from GameStop that was actually a NiB that had been reserved and never been picked up, and it has (*knock on wood*) always worked since.
My 360 was given to me as a present and until mine Red-Ringed, I was perfectly happy with it. I haven't had to spend any cash repairing it yet, and as long as Microsoft keeps it that way, they won't lose me. I also have a PS3 now, but compared to the simplicity mixed with the performance of the 360, I just prefer the 360. It just sucks they cut corners to rush it out. Hopefully they won't on the next one.
But I completely don't blame J. or anyone else with an experience like that for ditching Microsoft. Frankly all it would take is one fiasco involving me having to spend money despite it being their fault and I'd be done too.
I think the XBOX 360 is a sign that Microsoft doesn't give a damn about customer service, they only care about the maximum profit margin.
