Worlds of DS9 -- Ferenginar

Please avoid spoilers for DS9-Relaunch books taking place after Worlds of Ds9: Ferenginar.

I just wanted to say, props to Keith R.A. DeCandido for taking what I was sure would be the most painful book in the Ds9-relaunch, and making it completely entertaining. I would have never thought one could write a story about Ferengi that I would enjoy reading so much... I think now I have laughed out loud on the subway system twice while reading this novella.

I'll need to create a thank you thread for the other books in this series when I'm finished. It's amazing that I'm still involved in the Ds9 series having finished the actual series on Netflix over a year ago. Loving it. So far I have read:

The Lives of Dax
Avatar (One and Two
Abyss
Gateways
All Mission Gamma Books
Rising Son
Unity
Cardassia, Andor, Trill, Bajor, Ferenginar

Still NEED to read:

A Stitch in Time
The Left Hand of Destiny (1 & 2)
The Dominion: Olympus Decending (starting this now)
Warpath
Fearful Symmetry
The Soul Key
The Never-Ending Sacrafice

Any advice as I continue onto the Dominion and then to Warpath?

I have to second that. Given how much I disliked most Ferengi episodes I thought about skipping this book but I'm glad I didn't. I had quite a fun time with it and loved most of the jokes. Thank you, KRAD!

Thanks, folks! I had a great deal of fun writing Satisfaction is Not Guaranteed, especially since I've been writing Klingon fiction for so long, so it was nice to do something that was 180 degrees from Klingons. :)

Yes. Hold on to your pants.

Seconded. Warpath is especially awesome.

The former stories... the plot just thickens. I'm addicted.
Haven't read the Dax one- any thoughts?

The Dominion was is good, surprising.

Do you mean "Lives of Dax" or "WoDS9: Trill" ?

Both were worth the read. Lives of Dax is a really nice anthology (short stories) focused on each of Dax's previous hosts.

My only complaint about the Worlds of Ds9 series is that I grew a little tired of the fact that every book focused on internal political turmoil involving hyper-nationalism and acts of terrorism, protest and kidnapping (Conservatism verses Progressivism on Trill, Bajor, Cardassia, Andor). They were all entertaining, but the recurring theme started to feel a bit strange.

I really enjoyed Satisfaction is not Guaranteed it reminded me of the 34th Rule one of the few decent books or episodes dealing with the Ferengi in the Trekverse. (I'm not a huge Ferengi fan but I hate seeing the entire civilization as a bad joke).

I'm with Marie1 Warpath is one of the greatest DS9R novels in the series.:bolian:

Whilst I'm here can I just heap praise upon the excellent A Burning House? This was truly an honuor to read and it changed how I saw the Klingons and their way of life. It's not just the Way of the Warrior!

When is the next novel in this fine series coming out?

I meant I hadn't read "Lives of Dax" well, and WoDS9:Trill- but the latter I do intend to read.
"Lives of Dax"= worth the read? Then maybe I'll try it... I was just worried it'd be a bunch of Curzon and Ben's escapades that I had no interest in reading about. Other novels have talked about Audrid and Dax as an ambassador which were interesting. But a collection about the various hosts might be neat.

When is the next novel in this fine series coming out?

The Soul Key (see my avatar... wait for it...)
in Aug. then The Neverending Sacrifice in Sept.
Is "Neverending" one word in the title?

The former is set and continues from FS, the second is about Cardassia.

Yeah, I had that problem with the series too. The stories did seem to get a little repetitive in that way. Still individually good and interesting stories, but when taken as a whole it became a bit overwhelming.

It jumped out at me especially in reference to the Cardassia and Ferenginar stories - to wit, they were the same story. Both involved a newly-installed Federation-friendly but unpopular-with-the-masses planetary leader facing a political crisis which was secretly engineered by their own closest advisor with the intention of secretly bolstering that leader's public image.

Maybe it was intentional? To show that, whatever the culture and wherever in the galaxy, people go through the same problems? Especially in such diverse cultures as Cardassian and Ferengi. Perhaps it's notable that...

both are now in the newly expanded Khitomer Accords.

The Soul Key (see my avatar... wait for it...)
On that subject, where is the cartoon Jem'Hadar from? I love it!

Thank you Marie1, I was actually asking if there is another Star Trek: Klingon Empire novel out soon, sorry I wasn't clearer.:alienblush:

I don't think that 'Never ending' is one word in the title.

Satisfaction Is Not Guaranteed was a great read. I personally love the Ferengi and I feel the "Ferengi episodes" of Deep Space Nine are a lot better than some people think.

From Sev Trek, of course! :bolian:

I love the Jem'Hadar Sev ones.

What?? And I typed out all those words... you must be beaten with sticks...
:p

Yeah, I don't know why on earth I keep thinking that the title is one word... maybe because it's hyphenated on the cover, and we all know hyphens are evil?

^ Maybe you're being subconsiously influenced by The Neverending Story.

Satisfaction Is Not Guaranteed was indeed a good'un. I never noticed repetition in the plots until mentioned online, and still think the stories are variated enough to get away with it. My quibbles with this series was more a question of world-building, but given the amount of extrapolation involved in crafting many of these cultures, I suppose it was a given that there would be clashing perspectives.

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

^ Maybe you're being subconsiously influenced by The Neverending Story.

Most likely. :vulcan:

Was there a hyphen when Garak mentions the book to Bashir in ASIT?

I don't think so,but I don't want to incur the wraith of the Jem'hadar so I'll stop there.;)

Also Marie1 Hyphens aren't evil, Cardassians are evil!

Cardassians aren't evil... you just need... order. Yeesssss....

That being said, I found the Ferenginar story quite good... actually, I must reread it soon. But I found it quite perceptive. And I love Ferengi RoA. And the conversation Ro and Leeta had... *cough*
And the way Ro and Quark handled stuff.

And I wanna know what the OP thinks of the next story!!!! *bounces off the walls*

Yes, Satisfaction is Not Guaranteed was, I thought, better than any of the Ferengi episodes. I always liked Quark and Nog, but other Ferengi just get on my nerves.

Also, the Dominion story in that volume, Olympus Descending, is utterly fantastic. It's one of my favorites from the DS9 relaunch, and it leads directly into Warpath (don't start reading Warpath unless you have the time to finish the whole book at once).

BTW, ZMistress, you have the most awesome Avatar of all time. I can't help but laugh every time I look at it.

^ On that note, since I was going to start a new thread, but that may have been silly...
How do you pronounce Rotan'talag? Just like it's spelled? I noticed during the show that sometimes names sounded a bit different then the spelling, so how does it sound in your head?

I liked what went on in the heads of the characters, what was going on beyond Rom's "Ummmmm" etc. And Primadora...
*sigh* And Brunt... will he never learn?!
