Check it out...tactical canes.

:techman:

They're made with harder wood, and larger crooks...all the better to grab a fool by the neck and throw him out a window.

The guy who started the company also developed a fighting style with canes. "Cane-Fu".

They even have a wilderness survival type cane that has an inlaid compass, and shoots out sparks so you can start fires. Kinda like Rambo's survival knife....but a cane.

I wouldn't mind getting one of these. I've been wanting to get back into hiking, but with me needing a cane to walk more and more, I need something that can hold up to the work load but not just be a useless stick. Hmmm, wonder if he's up to making a couple of tiny mods to one-- a couple of things I'd like to add if I ordered one. Time to start saving the change.

As for cane-fu -- The concept is gaining a lot of popularity (it's been around for a couple fo decades at least but is just not getting noticed) among seniors, the disabled, and really just folks in general. There was a "Y" up around Knoxville that used to teach umbrella-fu as part of woman's self-defense class.

So even Grandpa can be bad-ass!
 Well my grandfather would have just pulled a .45 on ya', but this works too...roving gangs of retirees taking over the streets of Florida.

Seriously, I'm 32 and stuff like this interests me for a couple of reasons: 1) Self-defense is always good thing to know, and is as many forms as possible, 2) I'm using a cane more and more as my health goes downhill, so I like the idea of learning and adapting new techniques for my situation. I'm sure I'm not the only that thinks like that.

Well, the fighting technique hardly is original, in fact the wooden stick probably is one of the oldest weapons known to mankind

I'm just picturing a West-Side Story style fight with geriatric cane welders.

I mean, the idea for the elderly to learn self-defense using canes is a sound one, but then all these silly thoughts enter my head and I can't help but see it as absurd.

You laugh, but give a geezer a fighting cane, and train him how to use it, and the neighborhood kids WILL by-God stay the hell off his lawn.

Man, you're going to be that old guy who keeps the frisbee and the baseball when he lands on his lawn and watches all the kids on the block through a slit in closed blinds when you retire
