My GF and I adopted a beautiful chocolate miniature poodle yesterday from a rescue group. He's almost two, according to what we think, and is a very sweet, loving dog. He was the victim of neglect - up until a month ago, when he was rescued, he had rarely left a cage, been petted, or interacted with. I say rarely because I don't feel I can honestly say never, but he acts like never. If you put him in the middle of a room, he will find the nearest wall to huddle against. If you sit him in your lap, he will lay down as small as possible against you.

I took him to the vet this morning. He has a yeast infection in his ear, and they gave me drops to put in. We did a stool sample and didn't find any parasites, but his adbomen is very tight so we're going to be watching him. Since he's sick, they wouldn't vaccinate him and told me to bring him back later in the week once he starts eating.

This little guy can never replace Midnight - Midnight never met a stranger. However, we enjoyed his strong personality and loved him, and we felt that since we had such a good experience with him, that we would get a dog that was needier. We think we want to rescue miniature and toy poodles when we get a place out in the country after we marry, so Jack Bauer will be a great way to see if this is something we want to do. He's a sweet, sweet dog, and I hope he comes out of his shell. :)

^It's really kind of you to do this. :techman:

He looks like a lovely dog, congratulations, and I hope he gets well soon.

My uncle informed me that Mena, which is close to where we got Jack Bauer, has been a hotbed of conspiracy theories, second only to area 51. Apparently the CIA supposedly sold drugs from Mena during the Clinton administration, etc.

I had no clue about that when we named him Jack Bauer. :/

What a cute little guy. I hope he realizes he's in a loving home soon and gets over the horrors of his past.

Thanks Gertch. I think it will just take him time.

Here is a video of him walking. He's got a leash on but it might as well not be there - he won't follow a leash lead.
wait a minute - having problems with the video

Dogs like that rarely get over the abuse and neglect. Long before I was born, when my parents were building the house where they live, a recently dumped stray came to the house. She was part poodle and something else. She was an extremely loving dog, a good mouser, and great companion with the rest of the dogs. One trait she had was when being let out, she would tuck her hind end and scoot out of the house as quickly as possible. My mom figured out that whoever owned her previously used to kick her out the door.

Take good care of little Jack and use patience. He'll come around.

That's a lovely dog, apostle. :)

My family have kept three largeish dogs in the last 20 years or so, all of whom are dogs rescued by a friend and dog breeder, then given to prospective caring owners. Our third (and probably last) dog, a black Labrador who is now 16, was very meek and was quite wary of new people, but grew to like them. However, she did at first try to cower away whenever anyone lifted a newspaper or magazine nearby - I think she might have been abused physically that way in the past, and her reaction has since stuck with her all her life. Interestingly, a few years back we learned that she was fond of picking up letters from the front door and delivering them to her owner - something we discovered by accident one morning, which was a delightful surprise. Thanks to increasing age and severe arthritis, she doesn't do much anymore. :(

^The fact that he's willing to go to sleep on your lap without shivering or otherwise showing signs that he's scared is a good thing.

Zion, yes, arthritis can exact a terrible toll on dogs. It afflicted my first poodle when he got to about 14.

Jack Bauer just drank for the second time! I had to give him water from a cup, and he drank about 3 ounces! I was pumped. Now he is laying in Midnight's chair. Or rather, I put him there, and he is there. He's not really laying, sitting, or... I can't explain what he's doing!

I don't know either, Alpha. The best explanation I've heard is "hurting people hurt people." I guess you could add animals to that.

Jack Bauer just ate!

dogs are great and I'm glad to hear about your desire to rescue them . . . I can't imagine being so cruel to them . . . best thing to do is make sure they get good homes

Jack Bauer?

"Don't make me take a dump in the middle of the living room! I don't want to but I will if I have to!"

:)

I just dropped him off at home. Well, I didn't drop him off, I spent about half an hour with him. I laid down on the couch, and put him on my chest. He curled up against the back of the couch and looked very content. When I left, I put him in his kennel, with the door off, in the kitchen. I have some pads on the ground for him if he has to relieve himself. It's weird to me that he doesn't know how to use a leash, but knows how to use those pads.

Try to get the leash on him and walk him as soon as you can.

A proper walk will really help him bond to you.
