Odd or Even "Star Trek"

I was just thinking, technically, since this film is a prequel, it should be Star Trek 0. Or would it be more precise to call it Star Trek XI since it is the 11th film that was produced? Because if this film is a success, and I believe it's going to be, then it will be the first odd-numbered Trek film to be a success. But, however, since this is a prequel, would it be considered Star Trek 0 and actually be an even-numbered film or is the number zero considered to be neutral?

First odd-numbered Trek movie to be a success? How are you defining success, here? Granted that The Motion Picture has a mixed reputation critically; nevertheless, it is the 3rd highest grossing of the Trek films, and that's not even adjusting for inflation.
The Search for Spock is in the top 5, and both TSFS and Generations out-grossed The Undiscovered Country (an even-numbered film).

TMP is the highest-grossing Trek film if adjusted for inflation. And that is the only way you can truly compare box office results, really.

Well, you can also look at cost vs returns, which paints a different pic. I mean, if you only take in 40-60% on your sequel of what you took in on your first pic, but it costs only a quarter as much to make, you're realizing a pretty terrific profit and getting your money back faster too (just to compare TWOK to TMP.)

I just hope Simon Pegg was wrong (if people have watched Spaced, they will know what I'm referring to).

I was defining success as a favorite among fans. I know other odd-numbered Star Trek films were a financial success, but usually it seems to be that people say the even-numbered Trek films were better then odd-numbered ones (with of course the exception of Nemesis, which I do like). So I thought this movie may break the barrier for the odd/even numbered rule but I maybe mistaken, people keep telling me Nemesis broke that long ago. Which maybe true, but you still hear people talk highly about even-numbered Trek films then odd-ones.

Back to the Premise at hand: They haven't been Star Trek# since the Undiscovered Country, so it has to be XI because of the same reasons that we call Generations number 7, First Contact #8, and Nemesis #suck. It doesn't really have anything with Internal Chronology, it is date of production.

That said, I bet that the movie (XI) will start in the future (with old spock, old nero's original time), so you could argue that it takes place later in the Internal Chronology anyway. Well have to see.

I think THE MOTION PICTURE has to be set aside. Because it is still, I think from what I have read here and elsewhere, the biggest success in terms of its box office at the time...the movie made a lot of $$$$$. But clearly fans and non-fans had issues with it...

But I am one of those who marches to another drummer. I actually like TMP and Star Trek V, and even Star Trek III...and as I have said a zillion times before, I think GENERATIONS is the best TNG movie...though, I admit, popluar consensus tells me that most people favor FC.

The only Star Trek movies I actually DO NOT like are Insurrection and Nemesis. All the other ones, including Star Trek V, have aspects that I like...but as I have stated before, I have no intention, or desire, to ever see Nemesis again for as long as I live. I hated it that much. Insurrection is not that far behind. Who ever had the idea that Brent Spiner should sing in that movie should have had their brain removed..for life.

My current rating of the TREK movies, just incase you want to get a measure for where I stand...

KHAN
GENERATIONS
THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY
THE VOYAGE HOME
THE MOTION PICTURE
THE SEARCH FOR SPOCKOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO (i love doing that)
THE FINAL FRONTIER
FIRST CONTACT (because it ruined the Borg and the "E" upstaged the Defiant)
INSURRECTION

oh...and I just wanted to say that I like your SUPERMAN THROUGH THE AGES avatar...it is "DOPE", as the kids say these days...

"Dope" was more like ten or fifteen years ago, actually, and I would dearly love to see the end of that silly list thing that goes:
ITEM
ITEM
ITEM
.
.
/.../
.
.
.
.
. (and waaaaaay down here) that ITEM that you're trying to show how much you think it stinks.
Did anybody really ever think that was very clever? Yeesh. Just put it in last place, if you feel that making a list is necessary.

On-topic: The Odd/Even thing was always nonsense. It's looking for a pattern where there is none.
