Star Trek: Countdown TPB released this week

Crazy:wtf:...I guess the sales for issue #4 will plummet....
No.

From IDW's perspective, the orders for Countdown #4 are set. It's the way the Direct Market works. At this point, comic shops would be locked into their orders for Countdown #4 and have been for a month or two. So IDW knows how many of #4 they're going to sell.

From the comic shop's perspective, there's going to be a little bit of cannibalization, but not a lot. The trade business is generally focused on bookstores, and comic shops can't compete with the discount Amazon offers on trades. (Amazon is selling trades slightly above what they're paying for them; Amazon is just willing to take very little margin on them.) So the person who was going to "wait for the trade" isn't going to be buying issue #4 anyway.

The person who was buying the floppies and was going to buy the trade might be on the fence. But I don't think that will be significant in taking away from the sales on issue #4. Maybe a few hundred copies lost across three thousand comic shops.

I actually work at a Comic Shop, and I was referring to the actual sales by us in-store. I know that the sales for #4 were locked in January or so (minus any re-orders) when we did our Diamond order. Sorry that I wasn't exactly clear...I find it odd that IDW would let the TPB ship before issue #4 is even on the stands, but in the long run, I know it won't make that huge of a difference to the overall performance of the comic series. I'm one of those people who buys both the floppies and TPB for a few select books, si for me, it's kind of a treat to get the last issue early :techman:

I will get both, but I always get the floppies & the trades

I've been doing this with the IDW trek that i've liked. I can lend out the TPB's to friends and I can do my part to keep the sales of Trek-Comics strong enough to give us more trek down the line. Lending out the TPB's has even got some of my friends who weren't into the books, into them again (or for the first time :)).

People will still want to complete their set, even if just for investment purposes. Supplies of the first two issues are already out of print - someone said here, he had to get refunded by IDW when his issue #2 got lost in the post - so bringing out the trade early means IDW doesn't have to make a second print run on the first instalments, but obviously shops are complaining they need copies of #1 to keep customers happy.

Does anyone know when it will be out? I still gotta go pick up my Issue 3 since I have it reserved at a local comic shop. I hope there is some artwork and other designs in the back.

I have really enjoyed the series - it's nice to see the Enterprise crew move onto other things. Hopefully some of this stuff will be picked up in another IDW series.

Fo'sho.

I had hoped the movies would've shown the TNG crew moving on from the Enterprise, but alas they were stuck in their TV roles until the last few minutes of NEM. It's one of the things that I liked about the early TOS movies; there was this sense that the crew were moving on in their lives and careers. The huge reset at the end of TVH was a disappointment for me even though I loved the DC Comic adventures that followed.

Speaking of which, I really enjoyed the time the crew spent on the Excelesior in DC's first run TOS comics (between TSFS and TVH). It had that same sense that things had changed and would continue to change for the crew of the Enterprise.
