Where's Gary Mitchell?

Praetor

Vice Admiral
Admiral
I doubt we'll see him in the film, but was just wondering where everyone thought he was in the 'new' time line. Drunk? Dead? O.S. somewhere? Will you miss his presence? Do you even know who I'm talking about?

Unless I'm given reason to think otherwise, I'll assume that he's in more or less the same places and situations at more or less the same times we already know. We'll just be looking at places and situations and times in this movie other than those involving Gary Mitchell.

He's friends with Kirk at the Academy for what... a year -- maybe two? Served under Kirk on the Enterprise for a matter of a few weeks or a few months? That still leaves a lot of Kirk's life which doesn't have Gary Mitchell in it, so I don't think it's crucial or even necessary for him to appear or even to be mentioned in this movie.

In a thread several months back about whether Mitchell would be seen in the movie, I hypothesized that, if Mitchell and all of the other characters, places, events, ships, etc. which people had been insisting had to be in the movie actually were in the movie, you'd be looking at a seventeen-hour marathon of fanboy checklist action. I'm quite happy that they haven't felt compelled to shoehorn all of those things in, because I very much think that most of them would have effectively been reduced to serving as crutches for a crippled story struggling along under a burden too heavy for it to bear.

If I remember right, Mitchell spoke of Kirk as being an instructor at the Academy when he was there. Since Kirk may not be joining Starfleet when he should, this may throw off the timing. There's no telling what might have ended up happening to Mitchell or their friendship.

It's also possible that with the Enterprise being built later than it should be, its mission history will be changed, and there won't be any trip to the galaxy's edge or an encounter with the energy barrier. Thus, no metamorphosis for either Gary or Dr. Dehner. Both may end up surviving in the new timeline.

I'll bet in JJ Abrams' Trek universe, there is no Galactic Barrier...

And that is not a bad thing.

Apparently Gary Mitchell had to be dropped to make room for such "stellar" characters as Drunk Uncle Frank and the Hovercop. Woo.

I don't think that Gary Mitchell was 'dropped' on purpose. There is apparently no place for him within the story told in this movie, in other words, he is not important. He also showed up only in one episode. You might just as well ask, 'Where the hell is Finnegan? Ben Finney? Ruth?'
They might never show up in this alternate timeline!

P.S.
The area code for Munich is 089, not 89! :guffaw:

^^ Yes --

Mitchell, Ruth, Finnegan, etc could all still exist and still have been part of Kirk's life -- even in an altered timeline -- but just not seen in this film.

We may perhaps only see 15 or 20 minutes of screentime of Kirk at the Academy...maybe those are 15 or 20 minutes that didn't involve those people.

Sorry to pull your leg, Wormhole, but I just couldn't resist...
I can understand how you feel about the U.S.S. Kelvin/NCC-0514 issue because inconsistencies tend to drive me mad as well. However, even in the real world there are inconsistencies, exemptions to rules or simply stuff-ups.
Just look at the technical development of the German Panther medium tank during World War II... it goes Panther D (1943), Panther A (1943), Panther II (planned in 1943, never manufactured), Panther G (1944) and Panther F (planned in 1945, never manufactured). Doesn't make any sense either, does it?
So, the 'NCC-0514' registry might only be some kind of bureaucratic mess in Starfleet admin or a sloppy paint job in the orbital drydock.

Or as we like to call it, "Star Trek: Enterprise, Season Four."

Actually, I am kind of irratated we haven't heard anything about Finnegan either. I was kind of hoping Paul McGillion would be either Mitchell or Finnegan, but it seems as though he some nobody drill sergeant.

Then Munich rapes my childhood.

That works, though at this point I'm more contetnt to assume Captain Robau decided to be badass and give his ship the registry number he wanted for it, thus the zero.

One day Mitchell stepped out saying "I'm gonna pick up a pack of smokes, Jimbo...need anything?"

Kirk is still waiting for his Clark Bar and a V8. :(

Well, it raped my freshman year at university...

That works, though at this point I'm more content to assume Captain Robau decided to be badass and give his ship the registry number he wanted for it, thus the zero.

I could live with that, too...
However, right now I rather fancy the idea that the poor sod who botched up the paintjob of Captain Robau's beloved starship had to have his head surgically removed from his posterior...

Also, I vaguely remember to have read that the birthday of Captain Robau's mommy is on May 14...

[How's that for Star Wars-style retconning? Zoom!] :techman:

Gary does make a brief cameo in the film...
