Pike is back

Spoiler alert: When Nero and Pike get into a fight, Nero shouts, "Beep beep this, motherfucker!" and knocks Pike unconscious.

Actually it would be fine by me if they did a spin off TV series set after the Archer timeline with Captain Pike, played by Bruce Greenwood, he would make one of the best Captains ever. After this movie Trek is going to be in again, and we are in need of a new series anyways. Especially with BattleStar Galactica ending we have a void in the market for this genre. What's playing on TV that is a series in space? Nothing!

What do you guys think?

Problem I have is that the trailer makes Pike look like he's Kirk's mentor who sets young Jimmy away from his life of wrecking antique cars and starting bar fights to becoming a Starfleet officer.

In The Menagerie, Kirk says he only met Pike once, when he was given command of the Enterprise and Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain.

But hey, you kill someone like Captain Robau, the changes to the timeline are going be extreme. Extreme to badass degrees.

^^I know what you're saying, but to assume that Kirk met Pike only once, which was when Kirk took over command, is only ONE way to to look at it.

Here is the exchange between Mendez and Kirk regarding Kirk meeting Pike:
MENDEZ: You ever met Chris Pike?
KIRK: When he was promoted to Fleet Captain.
MENDEZ: About your age. Big, handsome man, vital, active.
KIRK: I took over the Enterprise from him. Spock served with him for several years.
Kirk never said anything about only meeting him once. It is not unreasonable to assume that wasn't the "ONLY" time they ever had any personal contact with each other -- that's only when they "met".

Also, Kirk never said that he met him when Kirk took over command of the Enterprise -- Kirk said he met Pike when Pike was promoted to Fleet Captain. Those could have been two different events separated by years (i.e. Pike could have been Fleet Captain and stayed in command of the Enterprise).

The whole "Kirk met Pike when Pike was promoted which was the same time as when Kirk took over the Enterprise" idea is only fanon (albeit reasonable fanon) and is not directly supported by dialog.

Of course if this film really takes place in an altered timeline, then anything could happen, but what I said above can also be true for the "unaltered" TOS timeline.

Well, the implication in this dialogue is kind of that it was the same event. When you say to Person X "Have you ever met Person Y?" then you don't know if X and Y even know each other at all.

Kirk's answer doesn't say it was only once, but it kind of implies it. I would still argue that if these two characters spent most of the movie on a mission together, at the end of which Kirk takes over command from him, it would not be in complete contradiction to this exchange from The Menagerie.

Liotta never had a thing going for him as Pike other than a superficial facial resemblance to Jeffrey Hunter. Bad plastic surgery has pretty much ruined him.

^^ Eddie Roth --

I agree. It's perfectly reasonable to go with the assumption that they met once, which was both the time Pike was promoted AND when Kirk took command. Without any other information besides The Menagerie, this makes sense and is consistent with one interpretation of the dialog.

However, if something new comes along which states that Kirk and Pike met long before Kirk took command, then that would become canon if it doesn't contradict The Menagerie -- and it is quite possible to do so without contradictions.

I think the little nod of his head works, because he does it as he says "12 minutes," knowing that, under most circumstances, being a captain for such a short time is absurd and hardly enough time on which to create a legacy. In essence his nod is driving his point home, how great George was as captain

That's my favourite line of the trailer - it's what makes me really excited to see the movie! I know it's only the setup for the main story but I don't care - I want to see it :)

I just want to say, these are excellent points! And I agree with you. :)

Was going to say the same thing more or less - he'd win a look-alike contest (although he has had a bit too much surgery and last I saw of him he could lose some weight), but his voice and mannerisms are very different. More New York 'Goodfella' than Starship Captain imo.

Greenwood, whilst he doesn't bear a physical resemblence to Hunter, has a voice and presence perfect for this role.
