The government of the New Republic no longer exists, it's the Galactic Alliance now. I'm not sure exactly what Leia's influence is, however, as I haven't read the first book in the new Fate of the Jedi series which moves the storyline forward (it's in hardcover, and I collect the books in paperback). But at the end of the last major series, Legacy of the Force, there were hints that the GA government was about to become very unfriendly towards Jedi, which doesn't bode well for Leia and any power or influence she may still have had.
I really don't mind the Jedi and the Alliance being in shambles at the time of Legacy, because it's so damn good.
Can't anybody in the Star Wars universe hold together a democratic government for longer than a few years at a time?
Legacy has avoided telling us what happened to them, so that they don't handcuff the novel line too much. We definitely know that Luke is dead, as his Force ghost visits Cade Skywalker on a fairly regular basis.

Where's the drama in that?![]()
He's appeared when Cade has been sober. And they even kept Luke's fate fairly vague. He could have either been a spirit, or a hallucination. Cade was pretty hopped up on spice or deathsticks or whatever, at the time.Legacy has avoided telling us what happened to them, so that they don't handcuff the novel line too much.
