NuTrek - It could have been worse... seriously!

I refuse to watch it. From all I've seen so far this isn't funny at all – well, at least to me. I somewhat liked the skits when they were part of the Bullyparade. They were more genuine Trek spoofs back then. But this movie ... not so much. I don't know why they thought it would be funny in the first place. Also, it got Til Schweiger – an actor which I loathe.

To be honest, I've never seen the Bullyparade. I spent couple of years overseas and my only contact with Captain Kork, Mr. Spuck, Pulle, Mr. Nasi, Mr. Popowitsch, Schrotty and Ms. Bora-Bora was the (T)Raumschiff Surprise DVD my parents sent me at the time...

However, I found this skit...

I watched the film when I was living in Berlin a few years back, but I suppose my German just isn't good enough for me to get all the jokes. That Bavarian accent is a real killer.

Pardon me whilst I scrub my brain with ajax and clorox to remove the 8 seconds I saw.

I tried watching that, but when you lose half the jokes through translation and the other half are variations on the same "oh look they're camp" gag, it gets old fast. I think I gave up somewhere right after the space taxi sequence (which, admittedly, had decent effects for what is basically an overdrawn skit).

Yeah, from the space taxi scene onward it's basically downhill only...

It really is. Even for someone who was born and raised in Germany. ;)

And even more so for a true (white and) blue Bavarian... aba ächt, he! ;);)

I've been to Munich once. The people were really nice, but my German wasn't good enough and I think they used dialect on purpose.

Anyway, those guys from the movie did one about the wild west, as well. Another two hours of jokes I didn't really get.

Waitaminnit... Isn't that J.J. Abrams on the right?

I recall that it's kind of an old joke in the north that the Bavarians speak a foreign language (and the Austrians are completely incomprehensible.)

For the sketches linked above, eh -- pretty much variations on the same joke, most of it, and it can get old quickly. The taxi driver's expressions were the funniest part, I thought. Some around here would probably approve of the bridge set, though.

Sadly, in my experience that isn't merely a joke. I was in Austria twice and had a really hard time understanding the folks down there. I mean, I speak a very heavy Berliner dialect, so I know how it feels when one doesn't understand you instantly. But at least Berlinerisch is still recognizable as German. :p

Yeah, and oftentimes it just isn't funny at all. Mostly they are just old jokes on the stereotypical view on homosexuals. At other times it's kind of a dadaistic humor with a Mothy Python attitude. There isn't really anything to get in these kind of jokes. ;)

Suuure, that's what they all say. :p

Seriously, though, we have similar difficulties with some regional American accents. The differences may be even more pronounced in Britain and there are some Caribbean dialects you'd swear sound nothing at all like English.

As a Mothers fan from way back, I have no problem with Dada, but I get the idea that a lot of the (T)raumschiff Surprise material amounts to nothing more than "They're flamboyantly gay, they're flamboyantly gay, they're flamboyantly gay - isn't that hilarious?" and after a few iterations, it just isn't very funny any more.
