The only thing odd in that litany is that you imagine that there would be something objectionable about him saying those things.
If Abrams doesn't make a movie for "future fans of Star Trek" then Paramount is going to the poorhouse on this one.
Is this supposed to fill us with....fear? Anticipation? Loathing? A spicy bean dip? What's your point?

He should have said "We made this film not only for Trekkies but also for future fans of Star Trek." That would have appealed to everyone and nobody would have felt left out in the cold.

Why couldn't JJ make a statement like this? - "we made this film for both Star Trek fans and future Star Trek fans." This guy just keeps putting his foot in his mouth. I will state it again extremely poor choice for director!
Nope. Brilliant choice for director, based on everything shown so far.
Possibly a lousy choice for sucking up to trekkies, but not the worst we've had to deal with either.

You mean, "have you seen his past movies that True Trek Fan didn't like?" Some of them, yeah. He's fine.
He is a terrible director go see Mission Impossible III again if you don't believe me. And what's with the shaky cam in Cloverfield wasn't that done already in movies!?! The guy is way to overrated! I would have preferred a Peter Jackson or Ridley Scott.
Abrams has quotes that come from all sides, depending on who he is talking to. There are plenty of instances where he has said that he made this film for one or the other parties or for all parties involved.
He wants us, trek's current rabid fans, to be there, but the film will be a failure if only we show up.
I see no reason to get offended here. He is a business man, he has to market the movie to as many people as possible.
And he is good at that. Cloverfield was eh, but MI 3 was the best of that franchise. And he has had great success on creating stories on TV.
I don't doubt his talent or potential. And Star Trek isn't real.
It really, really isn't.
There is really no hope of another series or movie in Trek as is.
I would rather have, and in some ways am relieved to have, Trek 2.0 to no Trek at all.
Peter jackson is due his respect, but with him, we would probably get a 3 minute long sweeping view of every ship to appear on screen and like a 45 second close up on Kirk's adoring face as stared up to the Enterprise being built.
I'm waiting for cloverfield two with more backstory. Really and I hope he directs it. Really. The trailer indicates that the direction is the best part of this film, finally. All they need is a good script and good music. The chances of those three things coming together? Slim to none.

I don't know much about being a director, but it seems like in everyone of Jackson's films, he doesn't mind focusing on one thing/person and keep focusing, and keep focusing, and then focus from another angle.....

And we probably would get a totally embarrasing final Kirk-Spock scene... Do you remember the dialogue between Frodo Baggins and Sam Gamgee at the end of 'LotR: The Return of the King'? No offense, but this was sooooo gay!
