Now, in case you don't know, I am an 18 year old senior in high school. I haven't encountered anyone else in my age range, so I guess I have some in-roads into a different set of social, uh, inclinations.

And, I have either good or bad news depending on how you view things.

Everyone I've talked to, mostly highschool or college-aged, has said they think the new Star Trek movie looks pretty cool. I know a couple of non-Trekkie people who actually want to see it.

The most impressive comment that I've heard is "I didn't even know it was Star Trek until it said so!"

I personally think that's a good thing, because it means that atleast the trailors have the ability to appeal to a larger audience beyond the folks who...well, who join internet forums devoted to discussing all things Trek.

It also holds the potential to finally make Trek cool again. Because, really, at its basic level Trek is entertainment- pure and simple entertainment. That's good- people will watch STXI for the explosions and the incredibly sexy Chris Pine, and then they'll go home and secretly rent an entire series on Netflix and then they will realize what a great treasure trough Trek is. And then it will get so popular that Paramount will have no choice but to make another series(after consulting Trekbbs, of course)...and all will be awesome.

And, as many of you have probably deduced, the movie so far has the same epic look and style as many of the big blockbuster hits- Iron Man, Transformers, heck, even Indiana Jones (recall the Lost Ark when boy Kirk is driving around and gets asked his name. Did anyone else think of Jones' boy scout days?).

Anyway. It seems the younger, under-25 crowd is interested.

^ That is a good thing. That's a new generation of viewers, a new generation of idealists and dreamers. :)

^ Yep. Your generation, I believe, will set foot on the Martian surface.

I went to the midnight showing of Watchmen, and this was here in berkeley and naturally the packed theater comprised entirely of college students. I was surprised when people cheered at the Star Trek title when it came up on screen.

Damn kids...Abrams is making this movie for adults AND stinking teenagers. Damn teenagers! The teenagers of this world will never amount to anything -- they're just teenagers. Why the hell should Abrams' try to make a film that teenagers would like, not just us old people?

Damn kids...get off my lawn!

[/sarcasm]

Yea, I also forgot to add that we will then go to Mars :-)

Boy! you two are UPBEAT and OPTIMISTIC!

Yeah! None of that sunshine and buttercups crap until I have my coffee. ;)

Actually, I'm around more than my share of young 'uns, and while I can't say I hear a buzz among them, there is an interest.
They'll never be fans like those of us who became fans when it was a weekly TV show and then on TV almost every day in syndication. But if they put the movie and any subsequent ones in the "must see" category along with other event movies like Batman, Spiderman, Iron Man, or another MI movie, that's just as good these days.

Got to start somewhere, right?

This is very much in the style of Armeggedon and Starship Troopers. More like the latter. Two of my favorite movies.

Here's one reason, no matter how you felt about Rick Berman, why it is good he is no longer running the Trek franchise. Yes, he lead Trek through its most prolific time in its history. But he also kept Trek from growing and expanding, both in story development and overall look and feel. As a result, latter Trek seemed so dated and stagnant compared to other genre TV and movies being written and produced.

I don't know what to expect from this new movie, though I am very optimistic. One thing I will say is that it looks like it has a fresh and vibrant look. And I'm encouraged to hear that perhaps others who may have been casual fans of Trek or not Trek fans at all see this as something new too.

Cutting through your sarcasm, Starship Troopers in concept is a very good story, as evidenced by Heinlein's novel. However, the movie was not "great" (actually, I found it to be quite fun, for what it was).

I gotta say that we can't (at least I can't) tell from the that the style of this film is similar to the style of the film version of Starship Troopers. Personally from the 4 minutes I've seen, I have to say that I don't think it will be at all similar in style. Starship Troopers' style was very unique.

No sarcasm implied. Those are two of my favorite movies because of their style, story, music and production values and actors. What else is there to a movie? ST would be well served to copy them or do something different or better style wise. I'm not complaining about this movie, so far. Actually so far even the story and music sound good. I think what really irks me is that aliens (esp. with ridges)are just a hard sell to any reasonable person especially the female contingant. Making Vulcans, Romulans and Klingons believable even to me is getting harder and harder.

Sorry. mea culpa...I suppose I find it hard to believe that you liked Armeggedon. Starship Troopers, as I said, was quite a bit of fun for what it was.

I didn't like Armeggedon so much, and definitely not as much as you apparently. But to each his own, I suppose. I don't really like too much of Michael Bay's work. His directing and over-the-top action usually ruins a film for me. I thought Transformers, for example had great potential and some fun dialog. However, the long action scenes had the opposite effect on me that they were intended -- I almost fell asleep during Transformers' overly-drawn-out final battle (seriously).

I still don't see any resemblance in the styles of what we know so far about Star Trek and Starship Troopers.

I saw Watchmen last night, when the Trek trailer started (Fuck yeah, first time in UK theatres we have the trailer. :techman:) everyone was oblivious to waht it was, i heard people talking; "whats this?" "Whos he" "Wooah" etc. Obviously, a majority didnt know the name James T. Kirk, or what the Enterprise looked like.

So, when the Star Trek type face appeared...

Silence.

Brilliant, they didnt see that coming. A kick ass trailer, action, sex, battles, bikes, chutes and... Star Trek.

The couple behind us even went "what?" :guffaw:

Its getting through, really is.
