New Trek game on the way...

In its attempt to help hype Lost co-creator J.J. Abrams' forthcoming reboot of the Star Trek film franchise, Paramount Pictures has apparently revealed a secret game project. Fan site Trekmovie.com has posted a scan of a flyer that its editors found tucked inside the Blu-ray set of Season 1 of the original Star Trek series.javascript:open_blog_image_viewer('2009/068/startrekDAC565_screen.jpg','e32006_blog');

The scan appears to be for a game titled Star Trek: DAC developed by Naked Sky Entertainment, the Los Angeles-based studio behind the decently received sci-fi action game RoboBlitz, released on Xbox Live and the PC in 2006. With its depiction of the new Enterprise from the film in a space battle with several Romulan vessels, the game appears to be a space combat title, perhaps similar to the Battlestar Galactica tie-in from late 2007.

Star Trek: DAC's release date is listed as May, no doubt to coincide with its film inspiration's May 8 premiere. However, the game may be less exciting that it appears. Its publisher is listed as being Paramount Pictures Games, which has released only iPhone movie tie-in games for films such as School of Rock and Shooter, according to its Web site. Attempts to elicit comment from Paramount about the game were unsuccessful as of press time.

If its anything like the Xbox Live Battlestar Galactica game, it's going to be horrible. Because that game was truly awful.

I'm less then excited to see that it looks to be a space combat game. I'd be more interested if it were a decent adventure game. Something that let you walk around the ship and interact with the characters. What was the last good adventure Trek? I really can't remember.

A Final Unity, in 1994. Before that, 25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites. I don't think any other game has got it right since.

With a developer known for iPhone games and such a short development time, smart money says this is a mobile phone tie-in with perhaps a DS port.

I am interested in this.
As fans we want to be able to walk around all the legacy ships & shuttlecraft, in all corridors, Jefferies Tubes, bridges in 3-D similar to "Grand Theft Auto IV" a sandbox-style action-adventure video game in Liberty City, a fictional city based heavily on modern day New York City. The goal for Liberty City environment by the designers was to have no dead spots or irrelevant spaces, such as the wide open deserts in GTA:San Andreas.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Theft_Auto_IV#cite_note-OPM_UK_June_2007-44 There are hundreds of virtual square miles.

As fans we would get more hours of 'gameplay' just exploring the ships and Starfleet Academy, and Federation Starbases: Spacedock, Drydock, Epsilon IX, Jupiter Station, Orbital Office, Station K-7.

Now if they were actually making a real sandbox-style game they would include all of these starbases:

that site also has all of the starfleet shuttlecraft, starships,

I would love to be able to explore them all.
Will Star Trek Online allow us to?

I somewhat liked the Elite Force 1 expansion pack because it let you wander Voyager. That was the primarily thing to do. You wander around rather aimlessly and can pick up little bonus objects and activate things.

Otherwise there's the TNG Interactive Technical Manual which lets you explore the major TNG sets via Quicktime VR (photos turned into 360 degree views). It also has all of the content from the book with the same name. Very interesting and right up my alley. It was made by Mike and Denise Okuda primarily..

And there's Captain's Chair which lets you explore the bridges and connecting sets of DS9 (Defiant only), VOY, TNG, TOS. Again most of the work was done by the Okudas.

Bridge Commander wasn't bad.

It's not an adventure in any sense, and there's certainly no walking around the ship and extremely limited interaction.

I'm somewhat surprised that there aren't any mods for the first person shooters that try to recreate entire Trek ships in detail. Although there are a few that do it partially. For ex, the semi-finished NX Enterprise mod for EF. It's action oriented though.

What I like about the old TNG Interactive Tech manual is that you can just wander around. It's very atmospheric too because it has the background sounds of the series. A bit on the lonely site though. :)

A little bit of trivia... Captain's Chair's Ent D bridge uses the wrong ambient audio effect. They used the engineering audio instead of the bridge. The Tech Manual has it right though.

It's a different developer so it's impossible to say how it will turn out. I played the Roboblitz demo though and I wasn't that impressed, other then it was a 50 MB (or so) game running with the Unreal 3 engine.

Hopefully this game will be very similar to Bridge Commander.

I hope its for a PC too - may encourage me to go splash out on a new one just to p;lay it if the reviews are any good. I haven't payed any new, decent PC Trek games for yonks. :(

After awhile, the best part of Captain's Chair was activating the self destruct.
