The TOS universe had already diverged from our actual universe. Because of the '67 Outer Space Treaty in our universe, no one was sending up orbital nuclear platforms.

As a TV show trying to "predict" the near and slightly further future for the purpose of entertainment it doesn't have to hit it on the nose 100 % of the time. It past will should aways be our present and future even if it contradict previous installments of the show.

Not a fan of the alternate timeline scenerio.
