Are the Eagles considered pop/rock or country?

I realize this isn't much of a question, but I grew up thinking The Eagles were a pop/rock band, but to my old ears now, they sound more like a country music band...?

I think they were generally considered a pop/rock band but it was the definition of country music which shifted from its bluegrass, country and western, and gospel roots and moved closer to what the Eagles were doing.

They're one of those odd bands that are both. I've heard them on country radio stations and on classic rock ones. Canadian band Blue Rodeo straddle a similar line, and I find a few indie pop bands have songs I would qualify as country.

I never considered the Eagles country. There was, however, a CD full of country remakes *of* Eagles songs (Common Thread: The Songs Of The Eagles). In fact it was that album that was responsible for the Eagles getting back together (specifically, the video for Travis Tritt's version of "Take It Easy"). :)

I think it depends on what era/lineup you're talking about. Certainly they were very countryish early, but Meisner and Leadon were the most "country" of the bunch. Once they left and replaced with Felder, Walsh and, Schmit who were established rockers, the tone of the band shifted significantly.

Though, for whatever reason, (I guess old age.) they seemed to have regressed a little in their sound lately.

I don't, however, get the "pop" label. I suppose it's because they are a "vocal" band and have had a lot of top 40 hits, but the music is generally much more aggressive in sound and in content than what you might expect to hear from, say, Fleetwood Mac.

Take a song like "The Last Resort." It's soft and melancholy in sound and has a "easy listening" feel to it, and got a lot of airplay, but given its content, I'd hardly call it a pop song. And is, IMHO, one of the best written songs of the last 40 years.

The actual REASON for The Eagles Greatest Hits being #1 is because it was offered as a freebie on every RCA/BMG/Etc. music club that existed. Yeah, more copies moved, but it didn't necessarily net more $$$ in the process.

Could be the other way around and that country now sounds like The Eagles, something like Keith Urban doesn't even sound like country to my ears. I'll have to take a listen the next time an Eagles song plays, I don't think of it as country because it's never been presented that way but maybe if I actively think about it while a song plays...

Considered a 'Crossover Band' but you hear them more on 'Classic Rock' staions.
I would put them in a Rock band catagory.

Way back when, early in their career, they were considered Country; but it wasn't such a big deal then, because there was such diversity in Top 40. It wasn't unusual to hear Country, Rock, Pop, Disco, Easy Listening, Novelty, Whatever, all jumbled together.
