With two months or so to the release of the new movie, Star Trek Magazine 17 includes an extract from Dayton Ward's own contribution to the 23rd Century, Vanguard: Open Secrets, which also puts a face to a couple of characters never seen on screen. It's the first of three issues dedicated primarily to the movie, but there's a lot of other material too, including Howard Weinstein talking about introducing new fans to Trek, a 5 page tribute to Majel Roddenberry (with pictures from her memorial service) by Bob Greenberger, and a feature on Star Trek: Countdown, which includes exclusive art designs by David Messina for Nero and Spock and some insight into the dating of the comic.
The movie material includes some interesting comments from Paramount's Marc Evans about why the studio turned to J.J., Bad Robot's Bryan Burk explaining the secrecy surrounding the movie, production designer Scott Chambliss describing the design logic, and insight into the casting decisions from casting director April Webster.
Add in reviews of Mere Anarchy, Wounds, Over a Torrent Sea and Full Circle and high quality reprints of the monochrome posters for Kirk and Spock and it's a full package. Available in the next 2 weeks in the US, and very early April in the UK.
Plus - advance notice that the 100 page issue 18, which includes all-new interviews with the cast members talking in detail about the film, will go on sale the weekend of release for the movie in both the US and UK. This is a one-off simultaneous release.

That sounds great. Looking forward to finding out why Simon Pegg was chosen.

You mean besides being a good actor, vaguely resembling James Doohan circa 1966, being absolutely hysterical, having a built-in fanbase from Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, and generally being awesome?

^Plus the fact that Pegg and Abrams had a prior working relationship from Mission: Impossible III.

Oh, he was also in a little known show called Spaced which came well before Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, but I was just commenting as I personally associate him with very dark humour and I'd guess that people who go and see Star Trek will consider Scotty a comedy character as thats what Pegg is known for. Plus in October 2007 when it was announced, it for me came a little unexpected so it would be nice to read why he was choosen for the role.

He played the tech-nerd who outfitted Tom Cruise's character; the Q to his Bond, basically.

    Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman

He is a good actor, but IMHO he doesn't look anything like Doohan.

Thanks for the update Paul. I'm looking forward to my issue coming.

I do have a quick question though. With the magazine now coming out every 6 weeks instead of every two months does that mean that my subscription renewal will come up sooner than expected?

Yeah, but most Americans will only know him from those films.

I would assume so, yes - it's based around number of issues. The ad in issue 17 says the cost is for 6 issues...

    Paul,

Is availability limited to US and UK or can I or anyone else get it in other countries?

It's a worldwide licence so it can be sold anywhere - it's distributed in US, Canada, UK, Australia and New Zealand, but I've seen it around Europe, and you can order via the website. Where are you based?

To be honest, my advice would be get a sub in the US, and ask some kind person to mail onto you... but any comics store that gets stuff from Diamond Comics will be able to order it for you.
PM me with your address in Jerusalem, and I'll see what my distributors suggest...

This should now be available on newsstands across America - official date is Tuesday but we've had a load of feedback already.
Excerpts from the movie stuff is up at various websites.

Got mine from Barnes and Noble over at Newport on the Levee yesterday along with Mere Anarchy. Haven't had a chance to read it yet.

I just checked at Fry's yesterday, and no luck. But it's not that big of a deal, because I plan on subscribing in the near future.

Paul, were the images of Cooper and Nogura in the excerpt modelled on anyone in particular? The image of Nogura reminds me of the late Mako.
