I think it'll do significantly better than most Trek films to date, whether it'll bring in enough to satisfy the suits in light of its budget is another question entirely.

What else COULD you base it on?

Ideology?

I can choose neither of the options of the poll.
I have no idea how this movie will do in the box office and I can't offer any valuable guesses.

The best I can say is that at this point, if any Trek movie ever has a possibility, the potential to be a mega financial hit and earn back that 150 million budget and much more, it's this one.

I didn't want to include an "I don't know" option since everyone would choose that one.

And sorry if this has been posted before, I didn't see one since the new trailer came out.

It all depends upon how the mainstream media treat it, and how it is promoted.

Yep.

That said, if it makes three billion dollars there will be a couple of "experts" wandering the boards explaining why this is a "disappointment to the studio" and "less than I would have expected."

Hahahha, omg, great morning laugh there.

And yes, it will be. And anyone see the entire page of reviews of the trailer
from critics? I think this is going to be 2009's Iron Man, well reviewed and
a monster summer opener.

I hope it's financially successful both because I'm genuinely excited about the movie and because it'll mean more Trek.

I think it's going to open huge and will probably drop like a rock after that. It'll make money and we'll probably get our sequel but I don't think it's going to be The Dark Knight or even Iron Man. I'd love to be wrong though.

I've been hoping all along, but it's this new trailer that has got me persuaded that this thing is going to work and it's going to be big for Star Trek. I just wonder what the studio would consider success in the short term?

My guess is that this new Star Trek will be number 1 on opening weekend with 45-50 million dollars. That's more than Nemesis made during its entire domestic run. If there is good word of mouth and people begin to realize they can see the movie without needing a lot of Trek knowledge, perhaps there won't be a big drop-off in ticket sales the second weekend and the movie can inch its way into the 100 million area. Would that be considered a success by Paramount?

All signs point to YES!:D
and the movie can inch its way into the 100 million area. Would that be considered a success by Paramount?

Not really.
The budget for the movie is about 150 million. So as you see just around 100 mil won't do the job.
I don't know why, but I see this movie making close to $100M on opening week:D I think it's because my sister, who I would not call a ''Trek'' fan by ANY stretch( she's no that big a sci-fi fan anyway) After I showed her the 3rd trailer, she said: That's what I'm talking about!!! ( you cant imagine the look on my face when she said she loved it I was shocked!)and I shulde mention she's a NASCAR fan, so maybe this movie will attract the NASCAR fan's too? Hey! maybe that's why theres a car ''chase'' sceene in the movie, to attract the NASCAR fans, they certainly have alot of extra income.

A few websites which predict box office numbers have ST making between $350-450 million worldwide. not impossible as prices today means some other of the Trek movies in the $200 million range and none of them had the buzz XI is getting.

IMO - $300 Million, which still would be a success and is rumored to be the minimum target wanted by Paramount.

Superman Returns did ~250 billion+ and was considered a flop because of it's budget.

I would be more sanguine about XI's chances if it's budget were in the 70-90 million range.

The Old Trek films after TMP only worked (when they worked) because they could take a 50 million budget and get a 100m quality movie out of that buget because the production personnel were from the TV division of Paramount and knew all the tricks for "making more from less".

This movie seems to be getting the right "early buzz" and Paramount doesn't seem shy about promoting it, so I think it very well could be financially successful.

I don't subscribe to the "Star Trek Stigma" idea that average movie-goers think Trek is only for geeks. People may claim that Star Trek has a "geeks only" stigma, but that doesn't make it true. Average movie-goers (like me) are bandwagon jumpers, so if this film gets some good early word-of-mouth, then those average movie-goers will be there in the theater regardless of an alledged "stigma".
