It looks like it has all the right ingredients, talented director, simon pegg as scotty, mega huge budget way bigger than the other movies, the fact that the heat is on to make trek good and popular again. I'm quietly optimistic.

I hope I'm not the cause for people deciding to use GTD to talk about ST XI beyond the occassional thread like this. That's not a trend I want to have indirectly started.
I have don't have the time nor the patience I used to, but if anyone wants to talk about ST XI in the ST XI forum upon its release, they shouldn't have to feel intimidated or uncomfortable. Talk to the mods and admins if you see that there is a serious problem and they'll decide whether or not it's something they agree with or act on or not. If there isn't a serious problem and it's just a clash of personalities, then a thicker skin is what's called for.

At first I was thrilled. After seeing the trailer and reading the description of the 4 scenes shown to journalists I'm sceptical.
However, I'll definetely see it at the cinema and probably pretty soon after it comes out, too.

That's very gracious, Garth, and I for one appreciate it. But I just wanted to say that I don't feel in the least bit intimidated by the XI thread. It takes a lot more than posts on a message board about a movie to intimidate me.
It is true, though, that I don't go there very often. The reason is that it isn't a lot of fun. Part of the reason for this isn't anybody's fault; it just comes down to personal preference. I don't really enjoy speculating about a movie I haven't seen, and I don't want to find out too much about it before it's finished. I realize a lot of people get a big kick at finding out stuff early, but I'm just not one of those people. So threads full of spoilers, even hidden spoilers, don't appeal to me very much.
The other reason is the negativity -- which isn't universal, by any means, but jeez, it sure is common. I mean, someone will start a thread about a reasonably interesting topic, and after a fairly short while, it just tends to deteriorate. So when I visit there, I tend to read maybe the first 5-10 posts in a thread at the most.
But I promise that when I do visit there, nobody's going to intimidate me. Good luck trying.

I have been accused of "hoping this movie fails" in other threads. Not true. I have never once suggested that others shouldn't go see this movie. I simply said that I, personally, won't go see it for the reasons already given.
The success of the film is not a factor in any of this.
Having said that, I have, however, said repeatedly that I think the chances of this movie making back the money they're spending on it are slim to none.
Too much money ($150m by most reports), no marketable stars, too much competition, not enough interest from the mainstream public, no big screen track record of either Trek or Abrams to suggest that either can generate that kind of income are just a few reasons why I have doubts about the financial viability of the film.
With respect to the two trailers. I said prior to the first trailer being released that, with all the Star Wars talk from Abrams and Co. that it would be a matter of time before we saw a pre-pubescent Kirk having pod races through the cornfields of Iowa. Instead, we see a pre-pubsecent Kirk racing a stolen car (in a time when the odds of finding hydrocarbon based fuel is likely impossible), shifting like Mario Andretti. Annikan Kirk is born. I went on to see probably a half dozen things I had issue with over the next 30 seconds.
We get a revamped version of trailer #1. Somebody finally remembered to include a shot of Leonard. Good move since he's the only person in the whole film anybody's heard of.
We then spend millions to air trailer #2 during the Super Bowl. As if their prime demographic would be sober enough to remember seeing it by the end of the game. We finally see McCoy... for about 2 seconds. Just long enough to mention his name. And, then we get fighting and explosions. Lots of them.
Any time we get about 20 seconds worth of pyro in a 30 second trailer, I start to worry. At least now we know where that $150m went.
Sadly, even if I weren't opposed to seeing this movie for personal, idealogical reasons, I've still seen very little that makes me want to see it otherwise.

I'm looking forward to it but I may wait until it comes out on Blue-Ray. I'm getting cheap in my old age and the thought of spending $30 on two tickets plus drinks plus popcorn seems wrong when I can spend $30 on a blue-ray disc, watch it on a 52" screen, and pause when I need to go to the bathroom.

I try not to take sides when I do post in the TrekXI forum because I have friends on both sides of the aisle and don't really want to let this movie's polarizing force alienate any of them, nor do I particularly wish to excessively pre-judge a movie that I'm actually excited about. Until I see the film, my full opinion shall remain as inscrutable as my Romulan namesakes. 
I have been spoiled on the film enough to convince myself that there's a good chance that the movie will be good, or at least adequate. (Then again, after 'Nemesis' my expectations are quite low.) I was previously relatively unfamiliar with Abrams' work, and the more I learned of it the more concerned I was, especially since it was billed as a prequel. We saw how well that went with 'Star Wars' and 'Enterprise' didn't we?
The one thing I am certain of is that this film is probably going to be remembered as being more divisive of the fanbase than any previous Trek project has been, even if only the damage to date is taken into account. And that's a damn shame.

I agree with everything you said. The position I am coming from is Trek really needs a boost right now. The only thing I see in the works is this movie. If it fails what happens to the future of Trek?
Yeah, my 11 year old nephew can't wait to see it, after seeing the preview. I have no interest in seeing it, I grew up with TOS and love TMP. So I had the misfortune of telling him I won't be seeing it with him, this film is for him, not for me.

As a longtime fan of Trek, I don't like to make up my mind about a 90-minute film from 30 seconds or 1 minute in trailers. Because it is Trek, I will definitely go to see it when it comes out, probably at the Thursday midnight showing. I'm doing the same with Watchmen, which I read in comics form.
I do find it odd that people who allegedly follow IDIC have problems with another person's take on Trek. I've read comics, novels, fan films and audio productions, and some I've liked but others weren't so great. Such is life, but I realize that if this movie goes per-clunk, it may be an even longer time before we see another project.
Again, if I don't like the movie, I'll state so. I've seen all the Trek movies, even though some didn't thrill me. The only one that offended me was Generations. I'm still steamed about killing Kirk in cheesy fashion twice in one movie. That's somebody else's guilty pleasure, not mine with my favorite Trek character.

This is the attitude I don't get. Maybe it is because I started watching when I was 5 (37 now). When I first started watching it was because of the cool spaceships, fighting and that it was just plain weird to my young eye. As I got older I started getting more into the morality play aspects, the drama of the series.
My 11 year old son has shown little interest in Star Trek to this point, but the trailers have him talking about going opening day with me. I figure this film is like marijuana, a gateway drug. If he likes this then I can start introducing him to other aspects of Star Trek.
Just my two quatloos.
