Question about video files

Quick question for those with some skill at manipulating video files taken with a digital camera.

The video was taken in what was the camera's portrait orientation, and the video is now sideways when played in any media player.

The question is: how can I rotate the video so it is properly oriented?

Help is appreciated.

Assuming that the manufacturer of your digital camera doesn't offer any software allowing you to address this problem in a less clunky fashion, also that you're running Windows...

Download and run VirtualDub.
From the File menu, select "Open video file" and open your video.
From the Video menu select "Filters...", add the filter "rotate", and select the desired rotation from the options presented.
From the Video menu select "Compression" and select XviD or DivX. If neither of these codecs are listed, you can obtain XviD for Windows here.
From the File menu, select "Save as AVI" and save your video.

If you have any difficulties with the resulting file, try the VLC media player.

Useful thread. I have a couple of vids I keep meaning to figure out how to rotate. Thanks!

From the Video menu select "Compression" and...

Ugh. Are there any options that won't re-compress the video and lower the quality?

I know Quicktime Pro will do that, but it's $30. If anyone knows of a free option that does this, that would be helpful. (And if there's not, then I would consider that $30 well-spent.)

VirtualDub is great. :bolian: I like that filter that makes the video look like an animated watercolor painting. :D

As long as you choose a high bitrate (like 1500kbps or so), neither DivX or Xvid will lower the quality.
