The CW has announced early renewals for Smallville and Supernatural.
In the clearest sign yet that The CW will live to fight another season, the network has given early renewals to a half-dozen existing series, including Superman drama “Smallville.”
The CW President Dawn Ostroff began telephoning executives at Warner Bros. Television and CBS Paramount Network Television about the decision Tuesday morning. The network could announce the news as early as this afternoon.
In addition to “Smallville,” the series renewed for next season are “Gossip Girl,” “90210,” “America’s Next Top Model” (cycles 13 and 14), “One Tree Hill” and “Supernatural.” While the solid ratings for all six shows made pickups likely, the renewals were not all foregone conclusions.
In the case of “Smallville,” producer Warner Bros. Television had been negotiating with series star Tom Welling to return. The CW’s renewal indicates the studio was successful in those conversations.

Huzzah! :techman:

I've read comments claiming that Kripke planned a 5 yr arc, but no quotes directly from him....

I only hope that Tom Wellings suppossed contract negotiation has a clause about finally putting on the suit. For some small percentage of time either per episode or per season 9. Its well past time and there is no cinematic Supes to "confuse" the masses either.

Good point. With the show moving into a 9th season, the storyline is practically demanding that he become Superman.

As Dean Cain pointed out, if the guy doesn't wear the suit, he's not Superman.

Now, the next important thing for me to learn is whether or not Allison Mack will continue with the show (an absolute must for this Smallville viewer).

Good news for Supernatural !! Smallville needs a serious overhaul if we're to believe this guy really is supposed to become Superman tho. I'm willing to give it a chance but the clock is already ticking.

a new season of Smallville *bangs head against break wall*

WHY!!!!!!

As long as they can continue to tell entertaining stories, then I have no qualms with the show going on. And if that means further exploration of the DCU and its denizens, I say go for it.

But's it's not the DCU. Not really. They're all superhero-lite. Smallville is an alternate universe in which Superman never existed and never will exist.

Semantics. It is the DCU for them.

Also, you are wrong in your assessment that Supes never exists/never will exist seems misguided. There has been plenty of evidence that Clark will (eventually) become Supes. The biggest fact is that we saw his cape flying in a future vision (in that one episode where the guy could see when you die).

The Legion knew he'd eventually be Supes also . . .

That's awesome news about Supernatural! That's one I look forward to every week. Smallville just seemed too teen angsty for my taste but I haven't checked it out for a few years, maybe I ought to give it another try.

Woo hoo!! Supernatural will live to its conclusion in season five!

In answer to the above question--yes, SPN's exec producer Eric Kripke has been quoted in print numerous times that he planned a five year arc for the Winchester brothers. That's the story he planned out from the beginning. This season's "In the Beginning" pulled together plot points from past seasons that you didn't even realize were significant plot points quite beautifully. It's obvious there was great forethought. It's possible that the CW might try to squeeze 6 seasons out of SPN in desperation, but they'll do it without Eric Kripke and the two leads, Ackles and Padalecki, who've been emphatic that they won't do the show without Kripke at the helm. Kripke doesn't want his show to turn into....well, Smallville, with a forever non Superman Clark.

To whet the appetites for how awesome Supernatural's been this season--
Here's the promo for the next new eppy on March 12th, "Death Takes a Holiday," (plus clippage from the next episode after that). Clarkie poo was never this bad ass.
Death Takes a Holiday

And a funny clip from season one of brotherly chemistry, in case any potential convert fans are out there.
Why do we torment our younger brother? Because he's there and it's fun

Great news for Supernatural. I think Kripke has indicated that he's willing to go a season more or so than five if the ratings are good but he is certainly not going to have it go on for eight seasons.

It's going to be pretty hard to top what the K man has planned for season five. The transformation of Sam from the skinny 22 year old kid from season one has been miraculous. He's a baaaaaad man.

I think Kripke meant he would extend the story a little bit and put in some more plot. We'll have to see.
