Uniform question....

El Chupacabra

The source that I got these from suggests that these publicity shot uniforms were used in the first few TOS episodes. Now I've been a fan for 30 years and I don't ever recall seeing them in use. Just satisfy me that the website in question has made a mistake......

Looks like a modification of the pilot uniforms using elements that would be included in the series uniforms.

The publicity photos were taken while the uniform designs were being reworked, and thus show some transitional versions that didn't end up being used -- at least as "hero" uniforms. It's likely that some of these intermediate tunics were worn by background extras in early episodes, simply because there wouldn't have been enough of the finalized uniforms to go around.

So this picture apparently vouches that Rand was supposed to be a big deal indeed.

Not these prototype uniforms, but certainly the first two pilot uniforms were seen in the background crew in "The Corbomite Maneuver." The pilot uniforms were further modified to look more like the regular TOS ones, which is most noticeable in "The Man Trap."

The zipper runs along the top of the shoulder, "The Cage" style, rather than the raglan sleeve zipper of the principal TOS uniform.

For contrast, the raglan sleeve zipper on the principal TOS uniforms (actual 3rd season screen used):

Notice that the zipper goes to the collar, running up from the side of the torso, and along the collarbone.

So this picture apparently vouches that Rand was supposed to be a big deal indeed.

Rand was intended to be the Girl Friday of the show. A kind of Miss Kitty to Kirk's Marshal Matt Dillon with the same vague romantic attachment as the Gunsmoke characters.

^ ^ Yeah, I heard that; and I was thinking it sort of went along with Gene's western pitch, for Star Trek to be the Wagon Train to the stars.

Grace Lee Whitney mentioned somewhere that she was signed as a regular, like Shatner and Nimoy, so yeah, losing Yeoman Rand, while it did free up Kirk to chase skirts around the galaxy, did put a crimp in the story plans.

So this picture apparently vouches that Rand was supposed to be a big deal indeed.

Or it could just be that they wanted to include some sex appeal in the publicity photos to attract male viewers (though personally I've never understood what anyone saw in Rand). Earlier, around the production of the second pilot, the publicity photos featured Kirk, Spock, and Yeoman Smith, who I think had only one line in the entire pilot and whose whole purpose was basically to stand there and look pretty.

There might be an analogy in the fact that the publicity images for the new Star Trek movie focus primarily on Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Zoe Saldana. It's a safe bet that Uhura's role in the film will be larger than it was in the show, but I don't expect her to be quite as prominent in the film as she is in the publicity.

I always much preferred the simplified sleeve rank of these early promo shots to that of the curly-cutsie sleeve brads of the production tunics.

***Hey, where's the flashlight pics?? I love those too............ ;)

YES!! Awesome! Thank you!

I like the Shatner/rifle pics too. And the Nimoy with the clear "space chart" things as well.

I'm glad I collect these kind of things. If there is a hyperlink, it is to a larger version of the picture.

(Speaking of collecting, thanks for the uniform/zipper picture upthread, middyseafort. I saved that one. :techman: )

As long as we are going into old publicity photos with early uniforms, let's not forget these. I know the following one of Kirk is from TrekCore. Some of these others might be, too. I don't remember for sure, although I think the one of Spock above is from there.

It is amazing to see all of the subtle variations in the uniforms. It shows how much attention to detail that Gene and staff had striven for.

First of all, I liked the away team jackets that you saw in the Cage... curiously absent from the next pilot, later brought back sometime in TNG.

Second, the curly bands on the sleeves also bothered me... but the thick shiny band alternative didn't work either. The Cage style bands (straight and matte glitter finish) seemed to work best. I'd also have liked to see the Cage collars used in black (meaning, a thicker black ribbed collar), rather than the thin ones that ended up as standard issue.

^^I don't remember any away team jackets in TNG. They had them in TMP, though, and the subsequent movies had the parkas.

So, are the flashlights canon? :p

I wonder why the flashlights though? ("torches" to you in the Commonwealth)

Were no phasers created yet? I'm guessing that must be the reason..........
