Where Do You Buy Your Clothes?

I used to have a white summer pair a long time ago, but I gave them to charity as I realised they weren't the most flattering - made my thighs look chunky. Have you tried the 504 straight fit tapered leg?

Their styles are very restricted in my size. I wear a 36x36. Other places say they have other styles but then when you order them, and this has happened to me a few times, you get an e-mail saying they're out of stock but they can get me a pair of 501's!

Are 504's low rise ? I can't wear low rise jeans, I'm not a teenager. :)

The way they sit is completely different, and they are much kinder to any bumps! The 501 are somewhat dated and are going to age you.

My age ages me! :p

If it wasn't for my stomach, I'd be okay. I actually consider my legs to be my best feature! (All that walking helps!)

And American Apparel rocks! Have you tried your underwear from them?

No, I like my boring M&S boxers. It's not like anyone's ever going to see them on me anyway.

Kohl's, Dillard's, Dress Barn (great designer knock-offs!), and Coldwater Creek (when they have sales). Online- Silhouettes and Ulla Popken, which both have beautiful and reasonably priced clothes for plus sizes.

Every now and then I hit the jackpot at Ross- like the $380 Calvin Klein jacket dress I found at Christmas- knocked down to 90% off! :techman: :D

Good old M&S (well, if it's good enough for Twiggy... ;)) and sometimes Debenhams too.

Casual clothes I buy from all over the place - I avoid anything with obvious lapels as I find them vulgar. T-shirts are for the gym so I buy the last season nike sporting gear from TK Maxx - so it's all that drycloth stuff but for the price of a cheap cotten t-shirt. Far nicer to work out in and you actually feel the part.

As for suits, I vary where I buy them but the styling is generally always the same single breasted jacket, dark, medium weight cloth - ocassionally a pinstripe (but narrow - under 12mm), block colours - greys and blacks. I tend to spend £500 - £800 for a suit but I consider those tools of the trade rather than "me" purchases. I run my own business(es) and when you are trying to convince people to sign contracts, a cheap ruffled suit doesn't really cut it and give out the wrong signs about the health of your business. Plus you mentally just feel 'right' in a well-fitting suit.

^Office Boy is just the name of the finish (sounds like something Philo should wear ). They do others in the same cut. The range isn't as varied as their 501's are though.

The only place I can find them is on Levi's own website, which means they aren't going to be cheap.

PS - Don't get me started on sizes. Does Kohls not understand there are skinny people? .
Yeah, I know how that goes.

I'm pretty tall, but Kohls seems to think that if you're tall, you must also be really fat. As a result, I can never get pants that fit quite right.

And the reverse is also true. Kohls and others store seem to think that just because I'm a fat woman, I am also 6 and 1/2 feet tall. :vulcan:

Yeah, I sympathize. I have two problems. First, the shape of my feel are almost fin-like -- my heels are thinner than the tops of my feet, making it tough to find the right shoes. I also have circulatory problems, so I have to have my shoes custom-made -- they're called orthotic shoes -- otherwise, there'll be hell to pay! -- RR

I could never buy clothes online. It's rare enough for me to find clothes that fit properly in the store. I couldn't buy them online without trying them on first.

Once you find something that fits the way you want it to, no big deal..
See, I know what size I am. But different companies have different ideas of what those sizes mean. Even basic stuff like T-shirts I have to try on first because the cut of them can vary from brand to brand (hell, even the same brand has different cuts).

It's not exactly the kind of stuff I would ever pay to get altered.
Yeah, I was going to say: Knowing your size and finding something that fits is very different for a guy than it is a woman.

Mostly The Gap, but I'm not averse to buying something from Penney's et. al. if I see something I like.

Depends what I'm looking for... Sears and Kohl's are good, and Fashion Bug. Which does have a full range of sizes if you look. Bought stuff at Target when I had gift certificates. It and Sears tend to have a lot of sales.

Ross and Goodwill.
if you keep your eye open you can find some amazing stuff at Goodwill.
No kidding. My son actually prefers to shop there since he can get a lot more jeans, tshirts and hoodies than he can at Kohls or Target for the same amount of money. Since he's in that growing phase of his high school years it works out well too. He outgrows stuff so fast it isn't even funny these days.

All Saints
Replay
Deisel
Benetton
H&M - for basics, especially undershirts for layering

And many more, but those are the ones I have the most stuff from.

I too have expensive tastes for my budget, but I deal with it in a number of ways. The most important is buying classic pieces of high quality -- they're expensive but worth the money because I can wear them for years and they'll remain stylish and intact. I do about half my shopping at small boutiques around Brooklyn and Manhattan. The other half I do at cheaper places. I like Ann Taylor for basics and work clothes, Filene's Basement is good if you have time to sort through all the tacky stuff, I've been known to occasion Beacon's Closet, and Target is the best place to buy pj's!
For hats I like Barbara Feinman and the Village Scandal (the most adorable hat shop in the East Village), though these days I tend towards having my hats custom made.
