Getting High in the 23/24th Cent...

2 of 10

Besides, Garek using the O.O. (Obsidian Order) neural implant in DS-9 ep
"Afterimage" and the usual drinking at Quarks, did we ever really see any subtance abuse in any Trek series or ep's. I no longer indulge in chemical abuse, however, It would seem possible that illegal drugs would still be in demand in the 23/24th century, any thoughs???

Unlikely. There is easy way to resolve human illegal drug demands. Use genetic engineering to make humans allergic to illegal drugs.

I got one word for you "White Katracel"

And those guys that shocked the crap out of Riker over some drugs being held on the Enterprise. you mean besides those?

I would think a society as enlightened as the Federation would have legalized weed, at least.

I never understood how humanity could have possibly "given up" smoking tobacco, either. Outlawed it, maybe, but that's pretty draconian. There would always be a few crazy holdouts who still smoked, especially since even during the 22nd century lung cancer was easily cured.

check out "symbiosis" TNG.The Ornarans are addicted to a 'plague cure' and end up giving all that they have to the Brekkians. this results in the loss of their society and no advancement in their technology. The brekkians have luxury and no need to do anything as they use the ornarans.both planets stagnate as they only have their minds on 1 thing, producing Felicium.a true drug culture.

Indeed. I assume the Federation would allow people full control over their own lives and to make their own choices. We've seen people drink strong liquor, so I can't imagine the Feds being hypocritical enough to outlaw a harmless substance like weed.

Chakotay used a little machine to induce hallucinations. Add that to Garak's addiction and one would begin to assume that highs are achieved electronically in the future. Also, consider synthehol... a high you can shrug off with a mild effort.

and I to am addicted to the locotic Psypscoticalusium, a drug that makes you think you're smarter than you really are. but that's for another time...

What's the one-size-fits-all anti-intoxicant / painkiller I know I've heard Crusher mention when people are brought in? Or was it Dr. Bashir?

"Hydrocortilene". That's it.

Umm...? :vulcan:

Didn't City on the Edge of Forever's original script feature a drug-dealing crewmember? (Not Scotty as Roddenberry had claimed, but some guest star.)

EDIT--
Hmm... Post in a thread about drugs, get promoted to the Admiralty. So that's how this board really works. :shifty:

I would think that the federation wouldn't go to far if every one was squint eyed and wining there outa munchies. Besides do you really think that the writers wanted to use drugs in a positive light with a show that's intended to illustrate that humanity rose above greed and money and stupid crap like that. Sorry if I offend any of you out there but my 2 brothers that were hopped up on weed all the time never made it farther then tent city with all the other homeless addicts in this town.

you did notice you are now a "rear" Admiral? need we say more...

I don't think "hopped up" is a good discriber, maybe "laid out"

"looking for a new sig line..."

There's also Romulan ale, which is banned but you can buy if you know who to ask. *lol* Is it still banned now that there's a alliance after the Dominion war?

What do you need drugs for when you got the holodeck? And there's the syndrome called "holo-addiction".

If you want to go on a trip you can simply run a psychodelic holodeck program.

Between romulan ale and holodeck what more do you need? You can probably get holo-cigarettes too :O)

Except that DS9's "Dr. Bashir, I Presume?" makes it clear that conducting genetic engineering on sentient creatures is illegal in the UFP except for severe medical conditions.

First off, it was called Ketracel-white. Secondly, Ketracel-white isn't a narcotic. It's health-stabilizing, not health-altering. The Jem'Hadar are addicted to it in the same sense that Humans are addicted to food: They need it to survive. It's their energy source.
