Star Trek Fundamentalism

as i said before there is nothing new under the sun in this thread.
that the movie would split trek fandom was laid out many moons ago within the future of trek forum right after the announcement about the movie/

heck some of us actually saw it start to happen in threads back there.

even then i still dont know it is will be the greatest split we have ever seen.
the one with the first season of tng was pretty bad.
each of the subsequent shows bought their own heated debates.

Yes but now we have the technology to wipe the other side out in a nuclear internet war, sure it will render Trek BBS uninhabitable for centuries and will likely destroy a good portion of the internet, but would it not be worth it to be proved right for all time since their won't be anyone left who disagrees with you.

with my luck my glasses will break and i wont be able to read all the books
:p

Reading is for zealots.

All zealot literature can be read.

Think about it. :shifty:

Now that the spittle has stopped flying for the most part, I'll give my $.02. Fans didn't kill Trek, lazy writing did. I would have liked to see Trek move forward and tell new, fresh stories in the existing continuity, but they went backwards and decided to reboot instead. I can deal with that so long as the writing is still good.

That's where I worry. I'm sure Orci and Kurtzman are nice guys and Trek fans, but what I've seen of their past work scares the heebiejeebies out of me. Transformers? Transformers! Did that movie have writers? The characters were carboard cutouts and the plot spent 90% of the running time on side characters (junk food hacker guy, random NSA hottie, shotgun toting SecDef) pointless sequences (Autobots hiding in the back yard) and pee jokes. This movie should have been about the kid, his girlfriend (maybe) AND THE GIANT SENTIENT ROBOTS. The 80's cartoon spent more time developing characters in a 30 minute episode.
Who knows, I may be wrong. All those things may have been the evil hand of Bay, but when I worry about Trek XI, I don't lie awake and mourn the loss of canon, I lie awake thinking that the fate of Trek hangs on the writing skills of the guys that thought that it would be cool to have Bumblebee pee on a secret agent wearing a Superman shirt.

It matters not.

Such people will fade away as easily as the memory of the last 13 years will fade away when the second coming of Christ in the form of JJ is upon us.

Not long now.

hmm punster//
;)

how well do you know your new lord and saviors.
the writers not only are also fans of all the series including the newer ones but also of trek lit.

So just what was wrong with Transformers then? What could they have done to have made that better? I think it did what it set out to do and it's a perfectly watchable film to waste a few hours to.

Or was it just an 80's cartoon that got a big budget makeover? You know, like Trek was a 60 sci-fi show that got a big budget makeover in the 70's.

Perhaps that's the reason for bringing these guys in - perhaps the studio sees that Trek simply was not fun any more and some loud shouting and explosions would bring in the megabucks.

Who could blame them?

I could not.

I enjoyed the last 13 years of Star Trek...
.
.
.
I am quite happy to throw the entire thing out and start over, In fact - I have avocated this several times.

Same here. I don't see why this is such a big deal. Loved TOS, TNG, ENT...don't have a problem with wiping the slate clean.

Me three. I'd rather have a movie with a good, entertaining story, not a piece of canon service that adheres to every minute throwaway line uttered across ten movies and five series. Screw canon!

Absolutely. :techman:

And screw anyone who would stop this happening - cards on the table here folks - there are forces at work out there who would do ANYTHING to stop this movie reaching the light of day.

Exposing and challenging them must be a priority I'm afraid to say.

This movie must stand or fall on it's merit - they must not be allowed to influence opinion on the basis of their fundamental dislike of anything they do not approve of.

Like all babies - this one must be given the chance to flourish and prosper - these zealots must be stopped.

"Obviously you have to be very true to spirit of what Star Trek is and you cannot violate canon..."

I'm not going to infer anything that isn't in the quote. Apparently, they are being considerate of canon more than some of the "fans" here...

Apparently, they are being considerate of canon

They are indeed.
That much is also apparent and by several other things Orci has said in past interviews.

But considerate as they may be, it is also apparent by said interviews that they will in no way stick to it religiously.

You mean like Wormhole and April's hit team, Cary's nuke (we knew he could build one, but it took Trek XI to get him to do it), or TGT's efforts to nudge Apophis into a better orbit for a late April strike on Los Angeles? My God! These zealots really would do ANYTHING! We have to move, True Fans of Trek! We have to save the messianic resurrection of our one, true Trek from these heathens who have lost their way!

Oh brother, I can't keep this up. Can someone else take over for me?

EDIT: Sorry, Trevanian ... but I liked your plan too much to reveal it. Whatever it is. Good luck with it!

When have we ever seen that? We get too carried away with "canon" and "non-canon" anyway when what we mean is reasonable internal consistency. There are plenty examples of lines and even entire episodes that have been quietly and cautiously ignored or retconned because they were dumb or just inconvenient. No one cried foul when we saw women captains in ENT despite what was said in 'Turnabout Intruder.' That's fine. That's storytelling. I personally think Orci and Kurtzman are going to try to be fairly consistent with the story and characters we know, and are apparently using a time travel/alt reality trick to cover the rest. Maybe not what I would have done, but they didn't hire me to write the thing.

Will I still go see it? Sure. Will everone else on this board? Probably. I just don't see the point in getting that angry about it, or , worse, ::cough:: Plumster ::cough:: baiting and insulting those who are disappointed at the direction things have gone.
