The latest chapter in Pensacola's 450-year shared heritage with Spain unfolded Wednesday night with the arrival of King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia.![]()
The Spanish royals touched down at a stormy Pensacola Naval Air Station shortly after 11 p.m. to begin a 17-hour visit commemorating explorer Don Tristan de Luna's arrival in 1559 at Pensacola Bay.
The royal couple, with an entourage of 50 people, disembarked from a Spanish Air Force Airbus A310 onto a red carpet flanked by a U.S. Navy and Marine honor guard as thunderstorms rumbled.

"It's wet, but the king and queen are here, so it's a wonderful day," Wiggins said shortly after the motorcade departed. "This is important in the history of Pensacola to have the king and queen here to help us celebrate our 450th anniversary."
