(SciFiNow Magazine) - Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and Roll

Re: Trekmovie.com article on Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and R

I don't think people would be too happy if O&K said "we want to give Trek big hairy cojones, man." But essentially, that's what they're doing.

"We thought it would be a good idea if, at some point in this movie, something exciting happened."

And it's posts like this that remind me that Dennis truly is a God.

As Picard said, the Universe cannot have been designed that badly.

Of course, the canonicity of "something exciting" happening is in dispute.

Dennis is a god. But Captain Robau is The God.

Seconded.

YES YES YES YES!! More Rock and Roll!!! By making it more like Star Wars!! Yes!!....Ohh...wait!

Not one person said..what they mean by "Rock and Roll.."

Roberto Orci: Obviously we were comfortable for Christmas, because that was its niche. But we all feel it can sustain what it needs to sustain in the summer. One of the things we said early on is that Star Wars and Star Trek are always the ones being compared to each other by certain people. Why is Star Wars able to surpass all of that even though they’re all in space and some characters are similar? It just felt like Star Wars had a little more rock and roll than Star Trek had.

Alex Kurtzman: so we figured the missing ingredient for this one was it needed a little rock and roll. And if we succeeded in doing that, I think it will meet the summer expectations. Star Trek was essentially a submarine naval battle, except in space. Star Wars was flying down the trench of the Death Star at the speed of mach 70,000 to shoot a little bullet into a hold. The experience as a viewer you have is different: there’s a speed I think associated with that experience. To my mind, there was no reason they had to be mutually exclusive. Obviously you have to be very true to spirit of what Star Trek is and you cannot violate canon, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have some of that as well.

Its good to see JJ and the crew and saying that trek was not good, and it has to be more like Star Wars..

Did you even read what you quoted? Because if you did you would see how wrong your analysis of what they said is.

I'm pretty sure the entire movie is going to consist of scenes like that. Except they will be somewhat brighter.

"Ze goggles!"

Gosh I hope there's a good, meaningful story and strong character development to go with the rawk.

You've been watching the trailers with your eyes but have you been hearing them with your ears? I hear at least some character development within them.

It is an origins story and I suspect it will be chock full of character development.

It sounds like he was right to me. It seems like the producers keep comparing this movie to Star Wars more than any fans have, and their comparisons usually come up saying that they want Star Trek to be more like Star Wars. In this case, they say that Star Trek was missing something that Star Wars had. It makes Star Trek seem like it's lacking or that even Star Wars is some epitome of greatness or apex of space fiction.

Re: Trekmovie.com article on Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and R

I think they keep making the comparisons to make sure Wars fans show up in droves at this film.

IMO, all the discontent over the comparison is kinda, sorta, petty. Sure, none of us want to admit Wars had something over Trek but if it is true then shouldn't we just admit it to ourselves and move on? *ducks*

Re: Trekmovie.com article on Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and R

If Star Trek pulls in anything close to what Star Wars pulled in at the box office, and tells a nice origins story along the way, I'd be a happy camper.

Toss in some metal bikinis and I'd be in my bunk.

Re: Trekmovie.com article on Orci/Kurtzman: Star Trek needs Rock and R

I was thinking about this last night... I don't know why. But I had a thought in my head of someone in the future researching old music and discovering a documentary about a band called Spinal Tap.
