Britain's Express Trains to be Built by Japanese Firm.

Yes, when your country is in recession don't help out your own industry instead go and help out the industry of other countries instead.

Maybe if the British bid had been competitive, they might have won the contract. Clearly the bid they offered wasn't competitive.

But whoever awarded the contract wern't thinking deep enough. If it had been awarded to British firms then that would have created jobs which in turn would have saved the government money in benefits and gave the government more money in tax deductions, those people with jobs would now have had money with which to purchase goods both stimulating the economy and giving even more tax money to the government which the government could use to even further stimulate the economy.

Economics doesn't work like that.

No, it does not. YOU don't seem to comprehend that.

Well that's just your opinion and doesn't change the fact.
Sorry, but it's not my opinion. I'm a business major and have done what you haven't -- taken classes in both Micro and Macro :)

That doesn't mean jack squat. I did science at school, doesn't make me a scientist.
There are people out there with driving liscenses, doesn't mean they're any good at driving.

can the English firms actually make the product at this time? Can they deliver it in near to the same timeframe? At what cost?

Those are the important questions that would have to be answered for your point to be vaild...

But if the British bid was higher, then the current taxpayers would be paying more than they need to for a government service. What you're proposing is a jobs program, not a competitive bidding process. I don't know about you, but I tend to get a little irate when I find out the government has awarded a contract for something when they could have purchased it for less expense elsewhere.

These are the sort of questions it is likely the government asked during the bidding process - if the British companies had been able to trump the Japanese one on these issues, they wouldn't have lost the contract.

:rolleyes: Seriously, you don't understand how economics works, so quit trying to act like you do.

^^ Which has been stated several times in this thread, much to the chagrin of the Techyon-conomist.

When giving out contracts it shouldn't be based on who can do it cheaper and faster, it's about getting good quality, getting people back to work and stimulating the economy. You're all basing your supposed understanding on failed economic principles.
You believe they should choose based on who can do it cheaper and faster, instead of looking at the bigger and wider picture. That's how the banks failed so miserably, they didn't see past their own profit margins.
It's time for a change in how business is done and how contracts are handed out because i'm sorry to be the barer of bad news but it's not working correctly and it's not worked for decades regardless of the tripe these tutors spout at university.

Sorry, but the Japanese can do it more efficiently, which translates to a lower cost (both time and money). Since they have experience with building high speed trains, the quality will be there as well (something the Japanese are renowned for) Why is this so difficult for you to understand?

You believe they should choose based on who can do it cheaper and faster,

No, we believe they should choose based on who can do it better. That's best quality for the best value, not 'cheapest'.
And British firms can't compare to Japanese when it comes to building high speed trains.
