uhhh... why don't they just BEAM down

...You're right. TREK BBS is only for people who love everything they're seen about this movie despite the fact that they've seen no more then those who don't like what they see.

Why the fuck is their opinions any less valid then yours? Every time someone says something negative about this God's Gift of a movie to everyone, we get ganged up on and ragged on.

It's funny that when someone attacts the movie, it's the poster who gets attacted. How about just saying why you do like the movie?

Let me sum this up. Everyone who likes or dislikes this movie based on 30 seconds of trailer and miscellaneous footage, already have their minds fucking made up. But enough of this fucking picking on people just because they don't like something. They don't like what they see. Don't take it so fucking personally...
I never said I liked the movie based on the trailer.

I'm a Star Trek fan, so my "Default" position on this film (which has been my position since April of 2006) is that I will definitely see it unless I find out some information that will cause me to NOT want to see it -- and based on the trailer and the very small snippets of information we have so far, I have seen nothing that would cause me to NOT want to see it.

Does that mean I absolutely love everything I've seen and heard about the film? No. All it means is that my "Default Position" has not changed. I can't really say that I have a positive feeling about this film so far; it's more of a "non-negative" feeling.

I suppose there are Star Trek fans whose default position is "I don't want to see it unless I'm given a good reason to see it", but I personally don't agree with that reasoning.

I don't want to be accused of derailing this thread, so back on topic...

...haven't we all seen enough Star Trek to know that there could very well be (and probably is) a reason they can't use the transporter...I mean, this isn't the first time Trek could not use its usual "tech" in certain situations -- i.e., transporter, shields, warp drive, shuttles, ship's phasers, etc.

^ Boggles the mind - it really does. Just how absolutely negative people can be based only on rumors and a couple of trailers totaling less than 5 minutes of screentime.

Good grief, lighten up, folks. It's only a MOVIE. Why not at least try to find some enjoyment in something for a change? Because it must be a really grim existence to spend your time worrying, fretting, and complaining about a MOVIE. Especially a MOVIE which hasn't even come out yet and about which we know very little.

I swear...sometimes I think a bunch of you guys WANT to hate this movie. I mean, you REALLY, REALLY want to hate it in the worst possible way. For what reason I cannot even begin to imagine...but you REALLY want to hate it.

And sorry...but I just don't get that. I really don't.

*shakes head in disgust*

Im inclined to agree. Come May, throw down the 10 bucks or whatever the cost of ticket may be, go see the movie, then we can all sit down and discuss it.

Its hardly fair to say the script is crap, or the movie is crap based on a small fraction we have seen of the movie itself via trailers and such. You cant tell me that them skydiving instead of beaming down to the planet is a deal breaker for some of you.

I'm taking this personally because few bad apples, inluding some mod posts, really have been turning me off from this site, as I'm sure it's turning others away simply because they feel bullied and afraid to post their opinions.

It's all just fucking pathetic.

I'll paraphrase the original Shakespeare:

The gentleman doth protest too much, methinks

Patrickivan, if you're part of Team MattJC, then you deserve the crap you get.

To me, the unconditional gushers are no different than the unconditional haters.

If the movie's good, it's good. If it sucks, it sucks. Life goes on the same regardless. It's just a movie and one that no one here has seen.

Patrickivan, if you're part of Team MattJC, then you deserve the crap you get.
If I were keeping score, I'd put Patrickivan down as being critical, but not on the extreme team. (Speaking of which: I'm pretty sure I've asked you before not to take swipes at Matt, et al. A little good-natured jousting over leading zeros and such is one thing, but the personal stuff needs to stop, even that directed at someone who isn't here to defend himself.)

I've heard that the 'MattJC Team' uses the theme from the "THUNDERBIRDS" when They parachute into this BBS and one can hear the "Six-Million Dollar Man" slow-mo sound when They are typing a post...

Where can I sign up!!!

...as for the topic on hand...

...see my previous post...:p

(ooooo... I think I just joined the 'SPAM TEAM' !!!)
:guffaw:

Because NONE of us have actually seen the movie yet, which is EXACTLY my point.

Why be miserable about something that hasn't even happened yet?

If you go and see it and hate it, well, come back and talk about it. Then you'll have reason to hate it. But some of these folks who are dead set determined to hate it, based on what little we know so far (and virtually ALL of it out of context, I might add, because MOST trailers take things out of context...or hadn't you ever noticed that?) just don't make sense to me.

They are deliberately choosing to hate something they haven't even seen yet. And by doing this, they are setting themselves up to be hyper-critical and predisposed to hate it, once the movie actually does hit the screen. And in my mind, that's sorta counter-productive to the whole point of a movie, is supposed to be about 'fun' and 'entertainment'.

TrekBBS is NOT just for the people who like everything about Trek. Get me talking about TNG or ENT and you will quickly discover that I by no means 'like' everything about Star Trek. In fact, I think some parts are outright lame. And some parts (I'm thinking Nemisis, here) are downright embarassing, they are so lame.

But at least I took the time to actually SEE them first (in most cases, a few times, in fact) before I decided I disliked certain parts. I gave them a good college try CHANCE. Shit, I watched a season and a half of ENT before I shut the damn thing off.

But some of the folks around here? They are just positive they are gonna hate this film. And based on what we have seen so far, I just think it's WAY too early to judge. And the thing is that it's really to their own detriment, all of this predisposition toward hatred, because in the end, the only ones they are hurting with this attitude are themselves. They are just sucking any potential joy they might recieve from this film otherwise right out of the thing.

And it's really kinda sad to watch. At least it is for me.

For all we know, someone could be jamming their transporters with some kind of 'technobabble' field around the planet. It's happened plenty of times in Trek before.

And it's pretty much the same conclusion drawn by lots of folks here, back when the EW article came out in October and Trailer 2 hit the theaters in mid-November:

Obviously, you're not going to take a shuttle out and skydive to the platform if there's an easier and less risky way to get to the same place. Something must be preventing them from doing it the easy, safe, beaming-down way; they've got to get there before _______ can do _______ and this is the only way they can get there in time.

No problem.

I dont recall ever saying someone elses opinion is less valid than mine, I just believe its not fair to make a rational decision (positive or negative) about a movie based solely on what we've seen and heard so far, which is to say not much.

BTW since you wanted it, heres a short list I've compiled of the things I do like.

1) Enterprise being built on Earth
2) Design of the Kelvin. It took me a little while to warm up to it, but its one of my more favorite Federation ships now.
3) Bruce Greenwood as Pike, and his character being a role model for Kirk.
4) Bana as Nero. I think Nero has a good chance to be a very good Trek villian
5) Visual effects so far have looked good to me IMO
6) IMO i believe Quinto will make a very good Mr.Spock

BTW i dont take anything personally. You or others could very well say my small list of reasons for liking the movie so far is stupid or what have you. I have my opinions and you have yours, and thats cool with me, no worries.

My main point is that I just dont see why theres alot of angry bitter posts about things like orbital skydiving, or the Enterprise being built on Earth instead of space, or about the Corvette, or Kirks superbowl commercial line to Pine. I just dont see whats up with the negativity based on what we've seen so far, thats all. :)

So ends the 'Fucking' Sermon, for today...

My guess is that this is a Homage to the scene We didn't get in GENERATIONs, but heard about, where Kirk is shown doing orbital skydiving at the begining of the movie.

Have you seen the cut scene from the movie? It was kind of neat in that it was showing a Kirk who was moving on from Starfleet... Leaving it in the movie really would have emphasized why Kirk looked so bored and uninterested on the Enterprise B.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qk9JJ4zWsr0

The new movie will obvioulsy have a valid explanation for jumping instead of beaming or taking a shuttle, and though I think it's going to be a pointless action scene, it's nice to have that kind of homage to a former Trek movie- even if it is loosely based on a scene that was cut.

4) Bana as Nero. I think Nero has a good chance to be a very good Trek villian

From what little we've seen and heard, Nero has the greatest potential cheese factor of anything in the film. I half expect him to look into a palantir at some point.

Also those masks on the Romulan(?) guards holding Nero look like something out of a TNG episode in both design and budget.
