Disgruntled Janeway fans: try a carrot

Nope I said to continue along with what you want to do but don't discount what others want to do. That's a strawman argument Semah.

Exactly. No one is discounting what others (you) want to do. This is at least the third time in these threads where you accuse someone of this. You are also a fan of accusing others of claiming that you have no right to feel badly about Janeway's death and claiming that others say that your opinions do not matter. When asked to link to examples of these claims, you vanish for a few days and then come back and do the same thing. It was funny for awhile, but now it's just getting tiring.

Yes it's tiring, and you post in itself is a demand that your right supercedes mine. Your post to me is an example.

Please explain how. I am honestly curious how you get that from my post.

I tried to find a post to reply to, but I can't seem to fit any particular one to what I want to say.

It's true that not every woman wants the same thing from a book or a movie any more than every man wants the same from a movie or a book.

However, it's also true that many, and I did say many not all, women want something that is slightly different from what many, and again I did say many not all, men want.

There is after all a reason why there are so many chick flicks out there, and there's also a reason why these are usually not most men's favourite, but loved by many women.

However, there's nothing wrong with that. At least not in my eyes so why are we debating this? Different people want different things and there should be room for all of us. ;)

you know what my sister Andrea's favourite TV shows are? CSI, Numbers, The Unit, The Sentinal, Primeval and Doctor Who.

you know what books she reads? Vanguard, Titan, the SW Republic Commando series among others.

my other sister, Michele? she watches Doctor Who, Torchwood and Sarah-Jane Adventures to the exclusion of nearly everything else (she also liked Lost in Austen, Merlin and recently got into The Mentalist). Virtually all she reads is Who tie-ins and fantasy stuff.

neither of them read romance novels. and the only romantic movies they watch are occassional rom-coms. like Hitch, which all 3 of us liked.

so that's a complete lie that 'all' women like romance.

my mother isn't big on romances either.

Women in general identify with the heroine (in this case read Janeway) and they fall in love with the hero (here insert Chakotay), both are needed.

Maybe in your narrow little world they do. Frankly, I find this statement pretty sexist.

Taya I said it was a generalization, I never said different. And no, not all women want to read romance but with the overwhelming number of romance novels sold I can make a pretty good guess of what the majority of reading women want to read.

While the majority of romance novel readers might be women, the majority of women don't read romance novels. Women do read other books, you know.
I don't know any woman who reads romance novels, to be honest.

Got to admit that my favourite novels aren't romance or even Trek - nothing like a good murder mystery book to me, the more twisted and difficult to figure out the better.

Tess Gerritson and Lisa Gardner are two of my favourite authors, but I LOVE Diana Gabaldon's novels as well.

So no, romance novels are not for all women, but maybe we need a discussion of what a romance novel is cause that can be many things, and who knows some of us might suddenly be into romance after all if the right definition is used. :)

My other half's favourite book is dune, however she hates most romance fiction. I would ask her to look at some fan fiction but the response is likely to be "what is this shit and why are you wasting my time with me?" in a very strong french accent and with a strong stare like the time I made the mistake of taking her to a british cafe where they served instant coffee with powdered milk.

And you lived to tell about it!? She must like you a lot. ;)

Probably with your attitude they don't tell you. "The Romance Writers of America" is a very real organization. It keeps track of trends and just who is reading romance novels.

The industrial statistics are interesting.

The Readership statistics are even more interesting

http://www.rwanational.org/cs/the_romance_genre/romance_literature_statistics/readership_statistics

64.6 million Americans read at least one romance novel in the past year.

The prestigious "Publisher's Weekly" had an article a couple of years ago talking about how carefully these statistics are gathered.

Just because you don't think you know anyone is reading them doesn't mean that they are not being read.

As for it all being sexist, no the sexist attitude would be, "I don't read romance so my wife, my daughter, and all the other females can't read them either."

Also, there is a stigma with reading romance novels. I hate the covers of those books for example. I would be embarassed to tote one of those books around in public, but that's just me. Anyway, one of my favorite authors is Jeffrey Archer, hardly romance. I also loved all the old Sydney Sheldon books. Even though there was a romance element to them they are not quite considered romance. I've read all of Dan Brown's books, the Harry Potter Books and I've just started Twilight. Most of the novels I read are mysteries and are too many to name. However, I am still a die hard J/Cer and have read almost every decent piece of J/C fan fiction I could get my hands on.

While I don't normally read Romance novels, I love a good romantic movie. Fanfiction is great if you really have an interest in the characters and if you'd like to see them get together. Such was the case with J/C fan fic. The funny thing is that I stumbled on it by accident. I did a search on google to find out whether Janeway and Chakotay ever got together. I saw a link saying they get together, by someone named Shayenne. I clicked on that link and started to read, thinking it was a review or a summary of an actual episode. Then I got to the umm shall we say "interesting" parts  and I realized that I had stumbled on to something very different than I was anticipating.

I abosolutely fell in love with Fan fiction and have read thousands of stories since then.:techman: I must say, my husband is much happier for my reading of fan fiction as well.;)

I'd just like to take this opportunity to mention that TrekBBS does have an ignore function, by which a user, once deciding that another user is never, ever going to say anything of any interest or wit, may add that person's name to a list, and never see that person's posts again. It's quite a lovely feature. :techman:

Yes but that is senseable and this is Trek BBS we don't DO senseable here. Oh by the way I'm looking forward to reading Losing The Peace.

You don't know anything about my attitude...

Just because you don't think you know anyone is reading them doesn't mean that they are not being read.

And that's not what I said.

No, the sexist attitude is to say "women do this, women read this", which you have a tendency to do in your posts. How can 50% of the population possibly be of one mind and share the same taste in art and entertainment?

:wtf: Now what fun would that be?

It's also considered pretty pathetic to use it. ;) (There was a discussion about this either in Misc. or in TNZ recently.)
