I never liked Pulaski as much as Crusher.

I hate to admit that Crusher's higher level of physical attractiveness does help her case.

But we never really got to know Pulaski as well as Crusher. I liked Pulaski much more as Season 2 went on. If they had had time to further develop her character...who knows? I mean, it's not like Crusher was that great if you only take Season 1 into account.

I surprised Dr Pulaski didn’t make a cameo in “Parallels”. Instead we got Dr Ogawa.

That would have been cool! Also I think Pulaski was supposed to be in the episode "Ethics" but Diana Muldaur did not want to play the character of Pulaski again.

I liked Pulaski. Grouchy, terrible bedside manner, didn't like technology or transporters. Reminds me of a certain other Enterprise doctor...

I think I prefer Dr. Pulaski. She seems more rational to me and less prone to act with emotion. Becoming infected in unnatural selection was due to overconfidence rather than acting irrationally on emotion. She reminded me a lot of bones.

I didn't like the way they just brought Dr. Crusher back to the show and suddenly Dr. Pulaski was gone, no reason, no rhyme, just "welcome back Dr. Crusher." I feel that this should have been handled better.

Dr. Crusher or Dr. Pulaski? Which one of you preferred and why?

I liked Katherine, she may have been an old salt but she sure didn't put up with PICARD...

Woulda been a Good line... "Damn it John Luc, I'm a doctor not a mechanic."

Yeah, i would have to agree overall that i would have preferred Crusher.
I thought her performances were 'good enough' albeit not stellar. I would have considered Pulaski when she was younger. I think i saw a few of her old movies sometime ago. Teleport her from that time and i think she would've been interesting cause the subplot with Picard is also a big part of the role.
Pulaski's character is too 'rough' for Picard. She seemed to be better for Riker's Father and his personality. Beverly's 'wooden' sensitivities matched Picards' personality and role better. Beverly also had a much better 'motherliness' to Wesley then Pulaski. So those 2 subplots give her the edge imo.

hehe...a female McCoy.

I didn't know that. Huh. My respect for her just went up a notch.

But I still, and always will prefer Crusher.

Out of curiousity, which episodes are you thinking of when you talk about Crusher acting irrationally on emotion?

I didn't mean to suggest that Dr. Crusher acted irrationally, merely that Dr. Pulaski was more rational than Dr. Crusher. That's not to suggest she lacks rationality of course.
For instance when Wesley was about to be executed for accidentally destroying a flower bed she acted as if the crew weren't going to do anything about it. I appreciate that her son was in danger but she's a starfleet officer, she should trust her crew to do their job.

It's not so much that Dr. Crusher had a particular emotional moment I can name, but with Dr. Pulaski it felt more by the book. She only saved her emotion for when it felt like the situation called for it. I can't help but wonder if Dr. Crusher would have ordered a permanent quarantine around the Darwin Genetic Research Station, sealing herself and thus condemning herself to death.

I loved Pulaski in season 2, she was much better than Crusher had been in season 1, However, if you look at Crusher as the show went on, she definately developed into a much better character. I voted undecided because it's hard to compare the two when one had six seasons of development and one had just the one. I'd have loved Pulaski to pop up later on in the show's life. In fact, I pretend that the doctor that Bev was clashing with in 'Ethics' (Toby Russell?) was really Pulaski.

Has Pulaski popped up in any Trek lit? What is she doing with herself? ;)

I'm so surprised that so many people have stuck up for Pulaski. When I saw this thread, I was sure Crusher would win in a landslide. I always liked her a lot, and not just because I thought she was a babe even though she was never presented to be perceived that way (I just wish they hadn't put so much eye make-up on her and Troi, yech!). I don't think she was a boring or wooden character, she just (more than any other character) wasn't given enough to do, and that's not her fault, that's a result of the writers and the fact that there were just too many other characters. It's true, most episodes centred around her were bad, but again, that's not the fault of the actress or character, it was just the luck of the draw with so many characters that this one was always written to get the short end of the stick in terms of quality episodes.

When she did get a chance to show some personality, I liked what I saw. I always thought of Pulaski as sort of a crochety old disciplinarian type, like a grumpy school principal or something, whereas Crusher was more vibrant and spunky. Yes, McCoy was grumpy too, but he was also endearing because he showed a lot of affection for his crewmates even through all his grumbling. I didn't sense that with Pulaski.

Crusher was much more friendly, warm, and funny in her interactions with people. For example, the look on her face and tone of her voice when she says "Maybe you're hungry" to Q in "Deja Q", her conversations with Data about dancing and the lesson she gives him in "Data's Day", the banter she has with the inventor in "A Matter of Time", and the way she looks at Picard at the end of "Allegiance". She was playful and flirtatacious, and this made her a lot more interesting to me than Pulaski. I always wished Crusher and Picard would get together and marry in the series or in one of the movies.

The only time I found Pulaski likable or memorable was pretty much her last episode (okay, she was in "Shades of Grey", but that doesn't really count). In "Peak Performance", I loved the scene where she tries to talk Data out of his quarters and accuses him of "sulking". That was the one time I thought she was actually funny and looked like she really cared about someone else, instead of just being the dull "all business" type of person she seemed to be most of the time.

We do get more of a feeling of warmth after we learn that Pulaski was an admirer of Picard. She specifically requested to be transferred to the Enterprise, it wasn't an assignment that just ended up in her lap. I think had she been given another season she would have gained more depth.

Script wise she was an excellent critic of Data's humanity without it feeling like she had something against him. Unlike Maddox who I'm sure most people hated. She gave depth to the other characters. Given that Data was the first sentient android in Starfleet it made perfect sense that some people would still have some reservations about it.

I voted Crusher. I do not remember much of Pulaski because I was an infant when she was on.

I really liked Attached, so I guess I voted Crusher for the ship potential. :alienblush:

I reluctantly voted for Dr. Crusher over Dr. Pulaski. Beverly is one of my least favorite TNG characters, but Pulaski was too much of a Dr. McCoy clone. She was rather obnoxious, but she did have the saving grace of being a memorable character. I would have liked to see more development for Beverly than just Picard's unrequited love interest. If they had made Beverly the opposite of Dr. McCoy -- rejecting all old medicine and embracing only the newest in medical technology and other kinds of technology -- that would've been a start. -- RR

Muldaur was a to over used actress in the Trek world and I'm afraid I can't get past the Ann Mullhall character in Return to Torrow

Overused? Because she had two roles on TOS more than 20 years ago (at the time of TNG)? :wtf:
