"You speak Prada?!"

It is a CHICK FLICK.

Males are required to ignore it.

Return to your baseball. If baseball happens in February. I do not know since I am focusing on the CHICK FLICK as my programming requires.

I mean, I don't care how dumb and shopaholic a woman is. Would any person with two braincells to rub together really go up to someone, who just rambled off a bunch of procuts made by a company, and ask them if they speak that company -as if that company is a language?

You mean like "you speak car" or "you speak football" to indicate surprise at someone being proficient in discussing a topic you didn't expect them to know about at first glance? I hear people use those phrases occasionally.

But then again, I just saw this commercial and thought the movie looked vapid and not at all interesting to me, which is no surprise since I'm not its target audience. I certainly didn't get angry at that line (frankly, your reactions to the most mundane things are almost always far more bizarre than the original thing you're complaining about), and I found the "you Googled finance?" line earlier on mildly amusing.

The "googled finance" bit IS kind of funny.

But, no, I've never heard someone say "you speak [subject]" in that manner.

Usually it's "you know about automobiles?" "you know about football?"

Not asked in a manner to make the topic sound like a language, "You speak Korean?!" "You speak Spanish?!" "You speak French?!"

Come on, it's a vapid, dumb, line. In an even more vapid and dumb movie but I am, granted, not in its target audience.

Congrats. You get my "character" here. ;)

It is a dumb line, in fiction or in real life (though it's meant to be funny and deliberately informal or dumb sounding). I'm just saying that I have heard people use similar lines before in real life and that it's not really a big deal.

Sarcasm coming from an internet persona that gets obnoxiously worked up over nothing doesn't wound me. :p;)

Errr, it's Valentines Day weekened. Males across the United States are going to get dragged along to see this or He's Just Not That In To You or any other of a million churned out romcoms, mostly starring Jennifer Aniston.

Movies like these are a free pass whenever men are accused of being shallow, so I suppose it's a wash.

You speak Klingon?;)

^Ding ding ding!

I happen to enjoy romantic comedies. I own a fair number of them in my DVD collection. Confessions of a Shopaholic does not look like it would appeal to me (I hate shopping for everything, even groceries, and fail to understand the obsession with purchasing tons and tons of clothes that you'll only ever wear once or twice. Yet, contradictorily, I own somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,000 books, and have probably only read half of them), so I will simply not watch it. But it doesn't mean I'll take a steaming shit on the whole genre, either.

However, I suppose in keeping with the spirit of this thread, I should either go outside and play football to restore my manliness, or call UPS and ask them to return my penis for a full refund. :)

This is true... *points to self*

Sigh, the things I do...

  • Coraline
  • The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
  • Defiance
  • Fanboys
  • Friday the 13th
  • Gran Torino
  • He's Just Not That Into You
  • Hotel for Dogs
  • The International
  • My Bloody Valentine 3-D
  • New in Town
  • Paul Blart: Mall Cop
