TNG... oozing the 80's

I only see season 1 as being dated. I think much of the look of the show holds up remarkably well. Some of the themes of the show to tend towards 'pc-ness run amok' though, which is more of a 90s thing.

Also, how does a woman having short hair translate to being butch?

I think that overall it's just because the 80s trends (hair, clothes, colors) have just faded far enough back on the style cycle that they're no longer in vogue and we see them as cheesy, but also not yet old enough to appeal as retro.

But Vance, you may be on to something as well.

I was watching some of those funny TNG mash-ups in another thread ( I haven't seen any TNG in a few years) and seasons 6 and 7 look brand new to me.

I'm going to be flamed for this one, but here goes...

I think that what dates TNG the most is how heavy-handed it oozes later 1980s and 1990s political correctness to many problems.

1) There are several episodes where the Enterprise crew have the solution before a problem even presents itself. We see that the 'moral choice' is forced onto a situation before the details of the situation are even analyzed. There's no agonizing over the tough choice, no hesitation, no real discussion with the crew seeking alternatives, it's "here's the right way to do it, because we're right, and we're perfect, look at how enlightened we are". Face it, folks, Q had a point.

I know this wasn't your intention, but this paragraph reminded me of just how often Picard and Co. solved the crisis of the week because another crew had bit the big one, sometimes before the crew arrived. Once in a while, the other crew would die while the Enterprise was trying to help them (hello, Yamato). I always thought that was much too convenient for that to happen so often. So really, there was no agonizing over the tough choice, no hesitation because, well, another crew tried the other way and died.

In every possible way.

One of the reasons I love this show most is the prime 80s nostalgia.
The uniforms, the hair. The sets, the hair. The music. Did I mention the hair?

I'm not hating. It's very difficult to create something on TV that completely reveals no ties to the decade in which it was created.

But even the end of TNG's run, well into the 1990s looks SO EIGHTIES upon repeat viewings.

I think it's utterly fantastic. But perhaps others find it irksome.
I think that they destroy the old enterprise in the tv show as they get too out dated. That's why the new Soverign Class enterprise is the best of the best

I actually like how the show was shot in the first two seasons better..it was more contrasty, and cinematic.

TNG always struck me as being more of a 90's show than an 80's show. But yeah, definitely 80's inspired colors, hair and fashion....................

('cept Stewart's head: his head was timeless) ;)

Colors?? Because its tan and brown instead of blue and gray?? I don't see any gaudy fluorescent colors.

I think the short hair on Yar was sensible for a security officer - Tasha struck me as the kind of person who would have no muss and no fuss about her appearance, so she would want something low maintinence.

Well, yeah if we're talking character I agree. I just never liked the "butch" look on a woman. Crusher's first season hair is how a woman should look.

How is short hair a 'butch' look? It's not like she had a mullet, wore plaid, and carried an axe! I think hairstyle is dependent on the woman and what suits her face, profession, etc. Hair isn't a 'one-size-fits-all' approach. Crusher's hair suits her but it would not look good on other women.

Well, maybe "butch" was the wrong term. What do we call women with short hair anyway?

And I will personally kill whoever answers with "women with short hair".:p

Sorry, but that's what they're called. There is no term for short hair and trying to come up with a stereotypical name is silly. Why is this even an issue?

How about we just call them.... women.

As per the colors, even at the end of TNG's run in 1994 I could still feel an 80s influence, but it was subdued... wow the cast and crew interviews on the DVD are mighty! There's one interview with Sirtis and she's in a huge puffy dress and her hair is gigantic. All she needs is the huge round 80s glasses and she can take us to funkytown.

It's not really. I was just commenting sometime back how I didn't think Tasha's hairstyle was attractive is all.

Only the first season of TNG really looks 'Eighties' to me. The later seasons look a tad more modern.

ENT will date as well. I'm predicting that the theme song will have people cringing in a few years, if they aren't already! It's hard to believe Broken Bow is getting on for ten years ago! What happened to all that time?

The theme song has had people cringing since September 26, 2001.

Not a bad song mind, you, but it had no business being on the opening titles of a Star Trek series.

Maybe something like Dawson's Creek, but not Star Trek.

Here's what MAYBE they could've used, if they had to have 21st-century music as the theme...(though I'm not sure this song had been published quite yet!)...

This would've been ten kinds of awesome.

Well, the pastels of the civilian clothes...

But yeah, there were an abundance of beiges, tans and browns shipside.

That song wasn't too bad....but,honestly, it oozed the 80s!

That's power metal for ya...it kinda branched off from the music of that time into its own little continuity. Which, frankly, is a hell of a lot less BLAND than what passes for pop music these days. ;)

I hear ya. I have a lot of Steve Vai, Joe Satriani and Yngwie Malmstein on my iPod, but it just seems like the electric guitar has been forgotten for the past 15 years...so it ends up sounding old. :(
