Iceland filming location for construction site of Enterprise?

So, I know there has been discussion/debate about why the Enterprise is being constructed on Earth (as suggested by the trailer), when it was supposed to be built at Utopia Planitia on Mars (or, was that only the Enterprise D, I can't remember now), but, has it been actually confirmed that what we are seeing in the trailer is Earth? I noticed that the scene with Kirk driving up to the Enterprise is actually shot on the basaltic sandur plains of Iceland. I've done quite a bit of field research there and recognize the terrain, it is very unique. If you're familiar with planetary science the Icelandic terrain is considered a fairly close analog to the basaltic terrain of Mars. Could we be seeing a modestly terraformed Mars surface in the trailer? Interesting that they shot that scene in Iceland, either way.

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

No.

The Enterprise is being built at the Starfleet yards in Riverside, Iowa. This has been confirmed by the writers and producers.

Previously, the ship had been assumed to have been built either at naval yards in San Francisco or in orbit somewhere (it's only Picard's Enterprise that had been mentioned as being built on Mars). The site of major construction is being established "canonically" for the first time.

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

Actually the Original Enterprise was but in "San Francisco, Calif." As stated on the ships dedication plaque. I personally take this to mean the San Francisco fleet yards which would include and orbital construction facility. And thus I disagree with the new movie.

The Enterprise D was built in Utopia Planetia.

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

Are we sure the Enterprise is under construction? Maybe it's a refit?

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

I am confused then, why is that scene shot in Iceland? I'm not referring to the scene where he is driving past fields, but where he pulls up to the ship. There is no mistaking that surface and I know they shot scenes in Iceland in and around the sandur plains. If it is Iowa they are going for, its gone through one hell of a drought (noticing the lack of vegetation, dust, and volcanic black surface). Perhaps they were just trying for really dark, dry soil. Who knows.

Maybe that scene wasn't really shot in Iceland and you're just mistaken.

Just putting that out there.

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

The Iceland shooting was for the "Ice planet" scene much later in the film when Kirk is exiled from the ship and encounters both the creature from the trailer, Scotty and Spock from the future. The Enterprise scene is filmed in Iowa with the ship and its yard added digitally in post production, the field and surrounding environment are real.

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

It is entirely possible that I am wrong, but since when does Iowa lack any vegetation for as far as the eye can see? In its natural state it is prairie land, in its current state its farmland and planted forest. What they may be going for is a place in Iowa where all the farmland, grass, prairie, and trees were cut down to construct Starships. That doesn't seem very environmentally friendly for the 23rd century.

It is also possible they are using a shot of somewhere else to represent Iowa. I know the glacier they used to film the ice scenes was very close to the wind-swept black plains of Iceland. Those plains drain the melt water from the glaciers. Well, no big deal, just thought it was interesting.

*emphasis added

If one defines assumed as "stated repeatedly by the show's creator."

Not canon, maybe, but not assumed, either.

The plaque said "San Francisco," which GR explained as referring the orbittal shipyards in orbit above the city (where they are shown to be in TMP).

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

Yeah, I kinda wonder where SP gets 'supposedly' from. Why would the ship's dedication plaque read San Francisco, CA?

I'm not trying to be a jerk but...I'm honestly looking for the alternative explanation.

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

Repeatedly?

Once, indirectly, in a book he "co-authored" with Stephen Whitfield. Presumably during his lifetime he had approval of later official reference works which made the claim, and we'll assume for the sake of argument that he read all such entries before they were published (despite the fact that he had at least one assistant whose job this was).

Where else?

In any event, there's never been an in-continuity establishing of how the Enterprise was constructed and where.

There will be in May.

Yeah, I kinda wonder where SP gets 'supposedly' from. Why would the ship's dedication plaque read San Francisco, CA?

Notably that (never referred to or legible on screen) plaque does not say a thing about the ship's construction; that it identifies the place of the ship's construction is an assumption. The RMS Titanic was constructed in Belfast and registered in Liverpool. Anyone know what it's dedication plaque read, if it had one?

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

Which still doesn't explain the ship's dedication plaque, SP.

I'm all for alternatives.

Maybe April liked San Fran?

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

"Explains" it just fine. Belfast or Liverpool?

As far as we know right now, there's no "April" involved. Just a Pike.

Re: Construction site of Enterprise, Star Trek XI

The entire ship is different now, its built in a different location, so the dedication plaque of this ship, should it even have on at all, will read "Starfleet Yards, Iowa, USA" or similar.

It may still say "San Francisco."

As far as we know now, San Francisco is still the headquarters of the organization that the Enterprise belongs to, isn't it?

I thought that was part of the point of having the location on the plaque. The USS Defiant has "Tranquility Bay, Luna Base" on her plaque in Enterprise IaMD so it seems its meant to list the facility at which the ship was physically constructed. The same as the Ent-D having "Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, Mars".

So "Iowa Construction Yards, USA" would be the likely sort of thing to see on it.
