Can someone please explain......

Fleet Captain
Fleet Captain
Why Titan has a Chief Tactical Officer and a Chief of Security. As far as I can tell no other ship has this. I wouldn't mind If Titan was a front line combat ship, but it's an explorer, to me this makes no sense.

They justify it in the books by saying something about how those two duties are generally shared but don't have to be, but I agree, I've always thought it was a bit off.

I guess they just wanted to add in a new character but I'm so confused i mean if invaders board the ship, who leads the security teams? Tuvok or the other guy? so stupid, and like I said no other ships have this which makes it even worse.

Keru would lead the teams in that case; Tuvok would handle shooting things in space.

I tried to fix it in my own mind by saying that they'd each take on responsibilities that other crewmembers would have if the two jobs had been unified, but I haven't seen any obvious evidence of that in the books.

I've always thought it was a big off having your security guy be responsible for defending the ship and being in charge of the brig. They are just two different things.

Well, except actually, Keru would still be responsible for both those things. Tuvok would just handle tactical, exterior to the ship. Those would both be internal security matters.

(I think.)

I've seen RPGs do this before, and it does make a lot of sense if you think on it.

The alternative would be to have a really good Deputy Chief. A "recurring" role series-wise. But since it's novels, they can take some new direction here and there.

I'm not sure what the equilivant to MI5 is in America (Home Land Security?) but in my mind the the responsibilities Keru and Tuvok have onboard Titan are pretty much the same way that MI5 and 6 operate, one is for internal problems (5) and the other for external problems (6).

I always thought of MI6 (SIS) as being equivalent to CIA, and MI5 (SS) being more similar to the roles of the FBI and NSA, but then the FBI also encompassed things like SOCA do in the UK...

Security is more like the police, keeping the crew safe aboard ship and on away missions. Tactical is responsible for combat operations, ship battles and the like. It's right there in the names. Security is about keeping things secure, tactical is about planning and executing tactics.

MI5 is the intelligence gathering organisation which primarily operates on British soil where as MI6 primarily operates on foreign soil. Since the September 11th attacks on America in 2001 and also the 7th July attacks on London in 2005, MI5 has conducted counter terrorism operations which has as far I am aware seen it operate not just at home, but abroad as well. Unlike the CIA though which is not meant to operate on American soil, MI6 can operate on British soil and even conducted operations in Northern Ireland during the troubles.

On a space station/ship I always thought there should be two people. Someone who is good at shooting the ships phasers isn't necessarily who is going to be the best and deploying security when the ship is boarded, handling brawls or in hand-to-hand combat.

Thats an oversimplification, but on larger vessels, and large stations, especially where there are a lot of civilians, I always thought two people would be better.

This is what I had thought as well...I'd always assumed that there were two people--but I had always thought that Security answered to Tactical. (Though that said, I figured Security did get a lot of autonomy on most matters.)

MI5 is broadly similar to FBI, but has no arrest powers. the UK equivalent to NSA is GCHQ, based in Cheltenham. (Government Communications HeadQuarters)

MI5 are responsible for counter-espionage and counter-terrorism.
MI6 are responsible for espionage.

and Spooks is named wrong. 5 aren't spooks, 6 are.

It makes alot more sense to me, for instance my ship is engaged in battle
and I certainly want the best tactician at the controls but I still want
someone just as competent handling ship security.

Worf can handle ship security, Bryan Singer can handle tactical.

In addition to the aformentioned example of DaVinci, the Stargazer has had seperate tactical and security officers since Reunion. That said, I don't know if that was an invention of MJF or if he was basing it on a bit of broadcast.

Missed Pete Wisdom's bunch...

Fictitiously yours, Trent Roman
