Trek 11 Tops MSNBC Most Anticipated Film of 2009

I wonder if they will mention this on MSNBC TV. They do mention off beat stuff like this with Entertainment, etc.

It is a live vote, out of 9,000+ votes it the leader at 28%. You can still vote, seems to be on going. Cast yours today!

The Timesonline rated ST the number 3 anticipated movie of 2009....but Harry Potter was first, and quite frankly its pretty much a known quantity and I doubt that ranking.

My most anticipated:

1. ST
2. Watchmen-A close second
3. Avatar
4. Transformers
5. Terminator Salvation
6. Wolverine

I hate to be a pessimist, but ST and Watchmen at 1&2 leads me to believe the geeks are stacking the polls. If anyone is trying to get a mass market preview of the movie going public, online polls are pretty useless. I doubt the average movie goer (my dad for instance) has a clue what Watchmen is or have seen any previews for it at all. Not to say either of those movies won't do well or don't have lots of people expecting them.

I do, however, think that the mass market will be interested in Trek again if the movie gets positive word of mouth. If the word is "it was pretty cool, it wasn't like the couple of old ones I saw" from the average 18-30 year old, I'd say mission nearly accomplished. I don't think the public is that far removed that they won't see it because Trek is "nerdy", I honestly don't. Trek's inherent geekiness has never hurt it, just as it hasn't really hurt Star Wars. Repetitive storytelling and being boring and irrelevant to the average TV and movie watcher has.

^^ I think positive word-of-mouth is what could help this movie succeed at the box office. If it's the #1 film of its opening week, it won't remain there long and will need to rely on positive reviews from average movie-goers to keep it near the top of the box office for the entire summer (say top three early, top five later).

Transformers is a case in point: it was only #1 for ONE WEEK, but since it became THE movie to see that summer, it hung around near the top for several weeks (it actually played in theaters for a couple of months) and made boatloads of money.

...as for the films I'm interested in seeing, I have to admit that G.I. Joe may be interesting, but strictly as a "guilty pleasure".

I’ve seen several different polls lately since the Super Bowl commercial was aired, and overall there has been a lot of great response to the movie. Star Trek remaining high up in most of the polling.

...about 29% (give-er-take a few)

Did my Dittio, Done, Ditto, Done...

I forgot about the new TERMINATOR!

That's two movies I'm definitely seeing in the theater...if none else.

I still reckon this film's biggest potential enemy is the Star Trek name. Some in the mainstream will simply not see a film just because of the ST label, no matter how good it is. It's been force fed to them for years that Star Wars is cool and Trek is for geeks (I always have preferred the more cerebral Trek universe myself)

The Empire magazine article on Abrams' film states, and I quote: 'Mention Star Trek to the average man on the street, and their immediate thoughts will likely stray to overweight fanboys wearing prosthetic foreheads and taking evening classes in conversational Klingon...Its something the other space franchise has largely avoided'

I remain worried about how the 'Joe Averages' will react to this movie.

Online polls are worthless in terms of judging the opinion of the genral populace. Plus, your choices are limited to 11 genre choices, of which 5 are profiled properly in the article.

This much, at least, MSNBC admits. At the bottom of the poll page, you see this disclaimer:
Not a scientific survey. Click to learn more. Results may not total 100% due to rounding.
The "click to learn more" link goes into somewhat greater detail, and makes no pretense that the results indicate anything other than the stated opinions of the kind of people who complete the kind of online polls found at MSNBC's poll pages. They conclude:
Online Surveys

In contrast, msnbc.com's online surveys — or Live Votes — may reflect the views of more individuals, but they are not necessarily representative of the general population. And they may be even less representative of those people who are registered to vote and who do in fact vote.

To begin with, the people who respond to online surveys choose to do so — they are not randomly selected and asked to participate, but instead make the choice to read a story about a certain topic and then vote on a related question.

They may be highly motivated supporters of a particular candidate who are determined to show their support for him or her in any way they can.

And while Live Votes are designed to allow only one vote per user, someone who wants to vote more than once can use another computer or another Internet account.

Live Votes are not intended to be a scientific sample of opinion. Instead, they are part of the same dialogue that takes place in our online chat sessions: a way to share your views on the news with your fellow users and with msnbc.com writers and editors.

Let us know what you think.

I wouldn't underestimate the power of geeks at the box office. Checked out last year's top-grossing films lately?

1. The Dark Knight
2. Iron Man
3. Indian Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull
4. Hancock
5. WALL-E

I don't think it was the "geeks" that made these films so successful.
These films managed to draw in the so called mainstream audience, that's why they succeeded so much.

^ That's true, but my point is that we can't forget that "geek" movies tend to be the top-grossing ones, these days. That can't help but improve Trek's chances.
