I saw a racist epithet posted against African-Americans and spoke against it being used on the Trek board.

I believe there is a separate board--The Neutral Zone--where anyone can post what they like whether or not it is offensive.

Moreover, the initial post of this thread, as well as the site it's linking, seems to make it as if President Obama speaks like this on a regular basis. However, the quotes seem to be from a larger work (his book) which recounts the language he heard growing up from a 'friend').

So, in effect, the initial link is taking our President out of context. He or She would have done best by posting the ENTIRE audiobook rather than the choice parts which makes our President sound like a black stereotype...

Honestly, context is important here. If you have a problem with someone quoting what someone else said and using racial epithets as a consequence, wouldn't you have a problem with Obama's original statements, since he just quoted what someone else said, printing it somewhere else, and using the N word as a consequence.

I hate hearing curse words, and I do not utter them myself, I can't tell anyone what to do, but for myself I choose not to say them and I choose to not be around people that are cursing, I remove myself from that

In the same token, I don't mind people who curse so long as it's done properly. Throwing out "shit", "fuck", "motherfucker", "goddammit" and the like in regular conversation for every fourth word is irritating. People who are syrup-sweet and lace their conversations with "gosh darn it" and other ilk are equally irritating. Don't pretend that by not using profanity I'm fooled by your goodness.

Also, people give words power. It's funny how the OJ Simpson trial resulted in our society now uttering, "the N-word" rather than saying, "Well, he called them a bunch of niggers". Couple that with people's ignorance when someone says, "The people at city hall are rather niggardly with the budget" and those people are "offended" at "racist language Yes, I've seen it occur when someone used the word, "niggardly".
