We've now seen 3 Underworld movies-- Underworld & Underworld: Evolution, set in the present day, and a prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans. But where should the franchise go next? The way I see it, we have 3 options.

1.) Pre-Rise of the Lycans. A prequel to the prequel, chronicling the birth of the immortals, the formation of the Elders, etc.

2.) Between Rise of the Lycans & the 1st movie. More stories following up Lucian's war against the vampires, his pact with Kraven, and perhaps even some more of Selene's backstory.

3.) Post-Evolution. The continuing adventures of Selene & Michael after the events of Evolution.

Which time period do you folks prefer?

Come up with a plausibly threatening villain, and actually make Michael interesting, and I'd be all for a post-Evolution film.

I voted post-Evolution because I think Kate helps keep the franchise viable for more installments. What is going on now that the Elders are dead? Is there a struggle in the Underworld for clan loyalty? Has Selene taken a leadership role to quell infighting in the Vamp world. Do the lycans/wolves respect Michael's strength like they did Lucian when he first came on the scene. Selene is a freaking Daywalker now, how does that impact the evolution of her and can that immunity be passed?

Rise of the Lycans as of yesterday(2/5/09) matched its production budget of $35m so its not going to be a flop and for a movie that was teased as being D-DVD its not a disspointment. Where it places on the success scale from here is to be determined. This weekend will be only its 3rd in release.

Personally I would like another prequel to Underworld/sequel to Lycans.
I think it would tie up the remaining points that have been discussed but not fully explored. The mentioned Kraven/Lucian pact. Rise of Selene and perhaps her personally exiling Tanis and his betrayal that earned that exile. Hopefully Marcus or Amelia would be the ruling Elder somehow.

The prequel to the prequel idea is one I've had as well. Are immortals like Alexander Cornivus still around or was he a fluke? What properties of this wolf and bat caused the "mutation" of William and Marcus if they were "just" immortal before being bitten. If the wolf and bat were normal then what was unique about them for the bites to have affected them?
The rise of the Elders would be cool. Also, we know Viktor was just a tyrant so his life pre-turn could have some part to play in this era as well.

I hope Lycans gets close to or over the US domestic mark of $50m. I feel that is a very good showing for a film without the star that started the series. Not to mention pure Werewolf dominated films at the box office don't typically make more than $30m and Lycans has passed that and has at least another few weeks at the theaters. I have to believe the studio expectations were lowered cause its
A) a prequel
B) no Kate
C) a werewolf film
D) was rumored to be direct DVD at one point

So much more I would like to see out of this franchise.

I'm always up for another Underworld film, whenever its setting may be, but I voted post-Evolution. After what happened at the end, I'm curious to see how the vampire and lycan forces have been affected.

Rise of the Lycans was okay, but it seemed unnecessary: we didn't really learn much that we didn't already know, so if they do another prequel, I hope they focus on a less-developed period of history in the Underworld universe.

I'm still hoping for a post-Evolution movie, though.

About five or ten minutes after the first appearance of icicles in Hell.

I'm pretty sure that the Arizona Cardinals winning the NFC championship was a definitive indicator of that.

I think that each option has its merits.

All of my favorite characters, particularly Lucian, Raze, & Kraven, are in the post-Rise of the Lycans period. But I'm not sure how that would work when we know the fates of all of the characters. I'd certainly like to see some novels fill in the remaining gaps but I'm not sure there's a movie in it.

I'm interested in how the series could move forward post-Evolution but it would require a lot more innovation since all of the good characters are dead except for Selene, Michael, & Erika. (And I think you might be able to retcon it so that Raze & Tannis are still alive.)

But I'm most intrigued by the possibilities of learning the backstories of the Elders, particularly the mysterious Amelia.

The same "we know their fates" angle could be used for Lycans and yet that was still a good movie. They did a good job of expanding on the tidbits we got in flashback in the prior films while adding a few new nuances.

I'd love to see another post-Lycans pre-Underworld prequel.
Don't think we will. If we should get another UW installment my guess is that the studio would insist it be post-Evolution with Kate to help ensure the best possible B.O. take.
