Yoda v Palpatine

Where's John Madden with his play by play?

"Here you got Yoda who knocks out palpatine guards then pulls a fake out on Palpatine."

Because everyone, including me, wanted to see it!

If there'd been the slightest chance of something unexpected happening in that fight I'd have wanted to see it too. There wasn't even any backstory between Yoda and Palpatine (which there at least was with Yoda/Dooku and Anakin/Obi Wan)

I have always been very firmly in the HATE category of Yoda fighting, and even moreso of the way it was handled.

If I were re-writing the PT, in AOTC when Dooku pulls his Saber out... I would have liked to see Yoda just stand there, and use the force to levitate Obi-Wan and Anakin's sabers around him and fight that way. Equally silly, yet more in character.

In RotS, I like the idea of the fight, but not the execution. I would have started it the same way, with yoda knocking out Palps' guards, but wipe cut away when Palps' leaps over the desk. then I would have had one scene with a person turning a corner into the senate chamber and we just see red and blue lights reflected in their eyes as they stand there stunned and in awe. Later, we would still see Yoda fall into Bail Organa's speeder and we move on as scripted. Then, later on, maybe with one more scene showing Palps "sensing" Anakin in danger, we see utter devastation of the Senate chamber... burn marks, holes in the walls, not one pod left whole... just leave everything as suggestion and you can fill in the gaps for yourself.

A character did that in KOTOR.

The fight was a draw...Yoda underestimates Palpatine initially, then Palpatine underestimates Yoda. Yoda quits because he runs out of time, and failed to gain support of the liberal media. ;)

Then the li'l fucker runs off in exile, to let the common man suffer and toil for 20 years to overthrow the Empire, while that grizzled little frog makes mushroom soup in a swamp hovel...one which is at least tyranny free.

As for the two jedi fighting a sith idea, that has NEVER worked out well. Qui-Gon dies in Episode 1 and Anakin loses his arm in Episode 2. Obi-Wan get knocked out pretty quick against Dooku in ROTS..."Sith lords AIN'T your speciality!"

When the prequels began I never thought about Yoda vs. Palpatine duel...because the original trilogy never makes a connection between the two.

^ I agree; this must have been a really tough scene to write. On one hand you know Yoda can't beat Palps because of the OT, but on the other, you have to make it very close because otherwise fans will feel cheated.

My question would be, why does Yoda even have to fight Palpatine?

Yoda had to fight and lose. I always wondered if Yoda was so powerful why couldn't he take out the Emperor and Vader and we got that answer in Ep. III. He couldn't and it took Anakin's return to the light side of the Force to take out the Emperor and restore balance to the Force.

Because Lucas wanted to settle the Yoda vs Palpatine online arguments once and for all. ;)

Because like it or not, the ultimate fanwank is to see the most powerful SITH fight the most powerful JEDI and oooo I loved it

Amen to that!

Gee I don't know... If it was not for the money would it not have been funny as hell to film it and have Yoda win. Killing the Emperor;) Only to also die from injuries. Also have Obi kill Anakin. Peace in the republic. Show that ending in a few theaters opening night at midnight and film peoples reactions;)

Some who have not seen the other Star Wars not understanding why others are shell shocked in there chairs;)

The fight was more or less a draw, which is a win for the Emperor, since Yoda fails to oust him (and then runs off and leaves the galaxy to its fate for twenty years; yeesh; at least try to help the remaining Jedi, douche).

I actually never expected that Yoda and Palpatine would duel in the movie so that was a nice surprise. Cool fight too BTW although I loved the first scenes with them with Yoda telepathically knocking his guards out and Palpatine's reaction to his survival ("Master Yoda, you survived?") and the "My little, green friend" line. Leaving aside the need for continuity, the novelization suggests that Yoda realized that he couldn't win against the combined might of Sidious and his Empire and decided to bide his time until he could train another Jedi to take on Palpatine and/or Anakin fulfills the prophecy. The end result proves his approach was ultimately the right one. Who else would've been able to train another Jedi if he had died there? By then he knew full well that the tide had turned against the Jedi and instead of fighting it he simply accepted it and lived to fight another day. Made sense to me.

There would have been riots! Nerds running down the streets of every city burning buildings, cars, etc... A mob would have stormed Skywalker Ranch to hang George Lucas. It would have been the end of the world as we know it.
