DS9: Unity...and TNG: Rogue

You have to excuse my quick little post.

I'm actually struggling with both of these novels. (Novels that I'm fitting in with some other reading, and busy life).

I've found that I'm more drawn to stories that are classic TOS stories, or give nods to classic TOS stories. (And too, I'm a girl that tends to like action).

However, Unity is moving slowly with me...(I'm at the part where the Andorian is speaking with the three relatives sometime after the Defiant has returned to DS9).

For some reason, the story slows down...

With TNG Rogue, that book is just difficult to get into...(and I'm a fan of Batanides (cue strong female character!) and Hawk (a character--with nice eyes--that was offed in First Contact)...


Do any off these novels speed up...? (I know each novel has its own fans, but these don't seem to be working for me).

Why would you worry if these are not working for you? If we were all the same, life would be very boring.

Anyway, I reread Unity last year and I did take a while to read it, but yes it will "speed" up and a bit more and it has a cracking finale

As for Rouge, that's the TNG Section 31 novel right? I've never actually read it so can't comment on it.

Different people like different things.

Even the same people like different things at different times. For no reason I've ever been able to articulate, my first reading of Unity was like a 6/10, seemed arbitrary and rushed and lame. My second reading, two years later, was a thrilling and expertly accomplished 10/10. I loved it. I have no idea what my issue was the first time around.

Have you read the DS9 novels preceding Unity? For me, what made Unity so special was that it was kind of the finale for the first "season" of DS9-R books. I loved it.

It will speed up... or maybe just skim a bit faster on the parts that don't interest you, and when it grows on you or if you miss something, go back later?

I was suprised by the lack of big action sequences in most of Unity too, but it really is more of a character based story. So I really think how you feel about it depends on how much you are interested in the characters. And just so you know, it does get pretty exiting once you get closer to the end.

I though Unity was an incrdible book but I had read all the other DS9 post finale books before that. I agree with others that it is a character based story but it does get better.

Mmmm. I thought they both moved at a good pace. "Unity" had more depth than I expected, with lots of surprises. Sadly, it was the first hardcover with no audio version, IIRC, and the first DS9 hardcover since the bizarre (and turgid) "Warped".

"Rogue" was full of intrigue and hard to put down.

I was looking forward to reading Rogue, but when I did, I found it very hard to get into. It was the S31 book I liked least. Abyss and Cloak were my two favorites. Shadow was so-so.

I actually tried to get through 'Rogue' 2 or 3 times, but always stopped within the first or second chapter...

(I'll put it on my booklist, and try it again. They say 'three times is the charm' so it'll either go in my library or donated).

With 'Unity' I do have to admit the parasite plot is interesting, so I may give that one another go as well...

I'm a bit surprised to find so many people thought it dragged. When the book came out, it got a lot of rave reviews, and went into multiple printings VERY quickly.

I actually liked Warped. Although it's been some time since I've read it, so I don't specifically remember what it was about, I do remember reading it in a single night.

There were a couple of books that were like that for me. Valhalla was one of them. Once I managed to get through it though, it became one of my tops.

Might have been. but it's been a while since I've read them. My collection of books has been in storage for the last 3 years, since my mom passed away. There were actually hers, but were left to me. I cant have them, the dvd collection, or my trust fund, till I'm 30...

Oh well, 6 and a half more years to go...
