Is the World worth it?

These day's you are considered virtuous if you haven't killed someone. That is how low the threshold for 'goodness' has been lowered.

It's a hell of a lot better than the days when men were considered virtuous for having killed someone.

There are certainly loads of problems, all of them springing from basic human nature, but this is the best it's ever been, folks.

Interestingly, it turns out that Clint Eastwood said this: “I don't believe in pessimism. If something doesn't come up the way you want, forge ahead. If you think it's going to rain, it will.”

It's almost like he knew this Thread was going to happen.

His Clint Fu is strong.

My mom believed that too, and it was that belief that killed her.

I will never forgive the world for that.

I'm not trying to be a dick here, and I don't know the details, but if your mom was suicidal how could believing the world was mostly bad have helped her any?

It wasn't that she was suicidal. She was driven to it. I didn't want her to see the world as bad. Just as it is. She couldn't do that. She believed that everybody should love everybody else, and when she couldn't have that, she tried to create it where it didn't exist. She had a VERY "pollyana" view of life, and was constantly let down. Over the course of her life, the constant negativity weighed her down until she simply couldn't handle the pressure anymore.

I tried like hell to help her, but nothing I did seemed to help.

I have a mentally ill mother who has "attempted" twice. You did what you could do. You (meaning any of us) can't fix someone. Be well.

Why is this the nature of the world we live in, and why would anyone choose to live in such a world?
Well, why not?

Not being flippant at all. I'm serious. The thread topic presupposes that perceived "worth" is a valid way of judging whether existence is justified. I don't believe that. Existence IS. It doesn't require some kind of tally sheet to determine whether it's justified. I prefer to just try to make the most of it & enjoy myself.
As usual, Holdfast is made of WIN.

Thanks. My mom wasn't mentally ill though. She was emotionally ill. There's a big difference.

I'd prefer to be made out of wine, but I'll take win for now. :D

^^ That would be me.

I can relate to that a bit.

What, you personally, or somebody you know?

Or, what I went through trying to help my mom?

I guess I have to say that I can relate to that as well. Not to point where I believe that everyone should love another, I've seen way to much downright evil and spite in life to believe that. But I just think that when kindness and helping people isn't rewarded or appreciated, when politics, scheming and knowing/making a deal with people are rewarded over good hard work, there's something wrong.

For example a guy who's in the second year of my education gave me the advice "if you want to succeed you have to be an asshole" I just wanted to say "Fuck you, I'm not going to be an asshole! I can make it without stepping on people!" But sadly he does talk about the reality we live in, not the one we should live in.

I'm on the verge of accepting that I'll be unsuccessful and alone for the rest of life just because people are so damned shallow and can't see past the surface, can't judge a person on what they actually do. I don't want to do that, but damn it, it's not that damned easy always.

I used to be an uncurable romantic. Now I'm almost entirely a cynic.

That reminds me of a Mark Twain quote:" I find that the further I go back, the better things were, whether they happened or not."

The world is a beautiful place. It's society that's in the toilet.

In other words, God made the world; it is beautiful and man ruined it with sin. A twisted way of thinking that I am so glad I have broken free of. I see beauty in mankind. Society is a beautiful place. Humans are as capable of beauty as they are of monstrosity. These two are always pulling against each other and always have been. It is the striving for the better that moves us forward continually.

I mostly just think people are douchebags. :p
